Applause

The Tribune received two letters of applause this week, one lauding a Livingston Post Office mail carrier, and the other, deputy mayor Michael Vieira, who will serve as mayor in 2023.Honest Mail Carrier“Many people say that the true definition of integrity is ‘doing the right thing when no one is watching,’ ” wrote Juan Quintero of Hllside Avenue. “I wanted to share this story with the rest of the community. The U.S. Postal Service has – at times deservedly – received much criticism in the last few years, but this will not be one of those times.“My elderly out-of-town mom mailed my wife a birthday card with a gift card inside. The envelope arrived soaking wet from a recent rainstorm and the gift card was missing from the envelope. I went to the Post Offi ce to report what I assumed at the time was a theft even though I had no expectations about recovering the card or the funds on it.“To my surprise, the manager informed me that the gift card had fallen out of the wet envelope during delivery and the mail carrier recovered it on the sidewalk afterwards. They could not identify its intended destination, so it was turned into the Post Office in the hopes that its rightful owner would come to claim it.”Quintero concluded, “The mail carrier’s integrity and honesty deserves the highest form of praise! Thank you, Jessie! You are a great example of someone who did the right thing when no one was watching. In this holiday season, I hope this serves as a reminder of doing the right thing and appreciating our postal workers at the same time. Happy holidays!”Good to Senior Citizens Walter Joyce of Collinwood Avenue, chairman of the Livingston Senior Advisory Committee, wrote, “As our councilman, Mike Vieira has been very good to many of our residents, particularly our senior residents. Recently, mayor-elect Vieira brought Italian pastries for everyone playing bingo at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, plus hand-made toy soldiers as a donation for the grand prize.“While a councilman, he has assisted us when we needed transportation to various senior activities and has demonstrated a sincere interest in improving the services offered to our senior population. Thank you and continued success during the coming year as you serve as our mayor.”
