Lancers’ Highlights Through the Winter Season

Photographer Don Schwartz gathered highlights of many Livingston High School (LHS) sports teams at the end of their winter seasons. The following is a compilation of the athletes’strongest games and accomplishments, according to Schwartz.JV Boys’ BasketballThe junior varsity boys’ basketball team finished the season with a record of 19 and 1. The season highlights included their winning streak in the Super Essex Conference games and the Championship of the Whitey Dukiet Holiday Basketball Classic.Freshman Boys’ Basketball The team ran off six consecutive wins to finish its season with a final record of 18-5. The Lancers went 11-0 in conference games and had overtime wins against West Orange, West Caldwell and Clifton. Offensively, the team scored over 50 points in ten of their last 13 and played their strongest team defense of the year over the final two weeks.Varsity Girls’ BasketballThe squad was led by two sophomores: Jordyn Fersko averaged 4.7 points per game and Mia Viola averaged 4.7 rebounds per game.Their first win of the season against Whippany Park in the Joe Pepe Holiday tournament was a high point. Three players scored in double digits during the contest and it was an overall balanced effort for the Lancers to pull out the 43-39 win against the Wildcats.Another highlight of the season was Senior Night. The Lancers were able to honor their five seniors: Sophia Levitt, Alex Winitch, Helen Cheng, Avery Reiman, and Christine Belcuore. This night also brought the team a 21-18 win over Kittatinny. Winitch led that effort with her career high seven points and seven rebounds.JV Girls’ BasketballJunior varsity girls played a 15 game season, winning 11 and losing four. The highlights included 11 wins, and two tournament second place finishes at the Essex County Tournament and the Holiday Invitational Tournament.Boys’ FencingThe boys ended the season with an 8-5 record, finishing fifth in the NJSIAA State Team Tournament. The boys won the District 3 Team Champion title and placed first in sabre, second in epee, and third in foil. The boys also placed second overall and first in sabre at the Cetrulo Tournament. Senior sabre fencer Mark Shteyn finished the season with 24 wins and five losses. Junior sabre fencer Shaoren Zhu finished with 16 wins and four losses. Sophomore foil fencer Payton Gao finished with 15 wins and seven losses. Senior sabre fencer Eric Brekhman finished with 17 wins and nine losses.Girls’ FencingThe girls wrapped up with ...
