Livingston resident Amy Falk Leibel visited Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) “World Headquarters” (founder Jeff Friedman’s garage) with a large donation of freshly dry-cleaned men’s clothing. Friedman invites neighbors to visit LPI’s website at njhomeless.org to learn more about how to help the homeless of Essex County.

The Livingston Township Council held a regular meeting, via Zoom, on Wednesday evening. This meeting had been rescheduled from Monday, June 7, and is now viewable on the Livingston Township, NJ Facebook page.

Because this rescheduled meeting occurred after our print deadline for the week, a detailed recap will appear in the following edition of the Tribune, on June 17. Below is a summary of the agenda, resolutions, and ordinances expected to be discussed at the meeting. It should be noted that resolutions and ordinances may be pulled from the agenda at the last minute, and just because they are introduced does not necessarily mean that each one has passed. Any potential changes will also be addressed in the following edition of the Tribune.

HILLSIDE TERRACE PIPING: A new PVC piping system was installed on Hillside Terrace to connect private house drains to a storm drainage catch basin at the intersection of Mt. Pleasant Parkway.

Jenissa Arnette has announced her intention to run for one of the two open seats in the upcoming Livingston Public Schools Board of Education election this November. Those two seats are currently occupied by Pam Chirls and Ronnie Konner.

Arnette previously ran for a position on the Board in 2020.

“This pandemic year has shown me that Livingston children need more robust support from the we work our wayback to normal life, our children need support to get back on track academically, socially and emotionally. My goal in running for the Livingston Board of Education is to make sure all Livingston students get the support they need.”

This Sunday, June 13, Livingston will hold its second Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding event of the year. The event will be held at the Senior/Community Center at 204 Hillside Avenue between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

These events offer residents drive-through service to dispose of unwanted electronics and small appliances and to have their confidential papers shredded.

Volunteers will be stationed on site to guide residents to the correct location in the rear and side parking lots, depending upon the types of items to be recycled. For safety reasons, residents are reminded to drive slowly through the parking lot, stay inside their vehicles with windows closed, and follow the directions of any volunteer wearing a safety vest. The electronics recycling vendor will provide personnel at the event to remove the electronic items from each resident’s vehicle.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), Livingston’s local charitable organization, celebrated a landmark “Quadfecta-Day” in Newark recently. Four different types of items needed by the poor were delivered to LPI’s distribution partners in Newark almost simultaneously through a variety of delivery methodologies and people.
“We’ve never had this before,” said LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman. “Sure, LPI volunteers sometimes deliver to several distribution partners during the same trip downtown. The Quadfecta is something completely different, and represents major growth and reach for Livingston Philanthropies, now in it’s tenth season of ‘providing for the “homeless, profoundly poor and disenfranchised.’ ”
He continued, “I’m especially thrilled about it, remembering that we started as a small coat drive some ten years ago and did not own a vehicle until less than two years ago.”

As of Wednesday morning, June 2, the Livingston Health Department has reported that a total of 2,127 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March. 88 of those residents have died as a result of the virus.

Compared to the same time last week, there are no new cases, with one additional death, the first since May 5. In the past month, there have been 30 cases.

The state currently lists one active case within the township’s long term care facilities, a resident at Care One at Livingston.

It is now official: Livingston will have a July 4 celebration this year.

“The July 4 celebration will be actually in two parts,” said Scott Maynard, co-chairman of the July 4 Celebration Committee, who explained that the daytime events will be held on Sunday, July 4, and the evening events – including the fireworks program – will be held Sunday, September 12. “With all of the uncertainties that we have been facing for the past months, we have worked very diligently to plan a spectacular daytime July 4 program. Meetings and discussions have been held with the mayor, Town Council, town manager, police chief, Health Department and the physician consultants, and they have finally given us the approval to have the first major townwide celebration in over 16 months. We missed everyone last year, and we want everyone to come to both special events.”
