Estelle M. Sher of Livingston passed away at her home on Sunday, February 3, 2019. She was 93 years old.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Livingston for the past 63 years.

Active with the AARP, Estelle also volunteered her time with Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Meals on Wheels, the VFW Auxiliary, the Oak Leaf, and the Livingston Historical Society.

Surviving are her husband, Melvin; her children, Pamela Mazurek and Howard Sher; and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Estelle was predeceased by her son, Larry Sher.

Services were held Tuesday at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapels in Livingston. Burial was at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Former Livingston resident Brian O’Connor died Tuesday, January 29, in Andover. He was 53 years old.

Mr. O’Connor was raised in Livingston, and later resided for many years at the Keystone Community Residence in South Plainfield.

He loved all things mechanical, listening to music, going to church, and a good cup of tea.

Brian was predeceased by his father, Patrick J. He is survived by his mother, Gail; and his siblings, Patricia Ann, Sharon, Dennis, and Patrick.

Visitation was held Friday, February 1, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, February 2, at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church, Livingston, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

It is officially the Year of the Pig, and it cannot be disputed that Livingston’s Asian-American community has grown exponentially over the years. With this growth, the celebration of the Lunar New Year is becoming ingrained in our community. From township events, to programs at the public library, to children sharing fun information about holiday traditions in school, we are expanding our calendar to include a unique cultural celebration.

The Livingston Chinese Association, Livingston Huaxia Chinese School, Livingston Chinese School, and Livingston High School Chinese Program are just some of the Chinese cultural groups that exist in town at the present time. These groups have grown, both in numbers and in the amount of cultural experiences they offer to the community at large.

The Livingston Wrestling Club is having its best season in more than a decade, said coach Matt Brill, with a record of 8 to 1 through the end of January.

The recreation team is led by eighth gradersAidan Carmody, Jason Quirk, Shaun Quirk, Phenol Morlan, Henry Han, James Rossi, Olisa Ojukwu, Noah Lerman and Xavier Miles. The wrestlers are in grades two through eight.

Stanley Simon, 83,of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at his winter home in Palm Beach, Florida.

Stan was born on September 11, 1935, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Moe and Anna Simon, and was the youngest of three brothers, Sydney and Edward. He grew up living above the family toy store, helping with the business as needed.

Stan attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth. He was an excellent student and a great athlete who received varsity letters in basketball, soccer, track and golf.

In his senior year, he received the very distinguished Cornell Cup which was presented to the one student in Union County best exemplifying all-around athletic and academic excellence.

He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and continued with post-graduate courses at New York University.

Livingston’s veterans’organizations honored community volunteers Don Schwartz and Nick Santinelli at their Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award ceremony on Sunday, February 3, at the Livingston Community/Senior Center. The award, which recognizes acts of volunteerism, brotherhood, and sacrifice, is named for the four chaplains of the USAT Dorchester. The ship was torpedoed during World War II, and as it sank, its four chaplains gave up their life jackets to other crew members, sacrificing their own lives to save others. The Intergenerational Prom Committee has announced that this year’s event will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Livingston High School.

The Intergenerational Prom is a collaborative event among the Livingston Public Schools, the Township of Livingston, and the LHS Key Club.

This year’s prom will be a celebration of “the red, white and blue” with a theme of “You’re a Grand Old Flag!”

For over three decades, this special dinner/dance party has been bringing Livingston students and senior citizens together to get to know each other as members of the same community.

A sixth grade student was rescued Tuesday evening after falling through the ice on Littell’s Pond.

Just after 5 p.m. on February 5, with the temperature at about 60 degrees, the 12-year-old boy went on the ice to retrieve a basketball and fell through.

Livingston Police officers and the Livingston Fire Department rushed to the scene, with officers David Cordero and Sean Whalen arriving first to find the boy in the pond.

The boy, who was able to stand with the water coming up to his chest, could not get out of the water on his own. The officers then went onto the ice and used a rope to pull the boy from the water within a matter of minutes.
