Mass Offered Saturday For Patricia L. Braun

Patricia L. Braun (Connell) of Livingston died Wednesday, November 7. She was 88 years old. Visitation was held at Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, Roseland, on Friday, November 9. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Livingston, on Saturday, November 10, followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Braun Jr. She is survived by her four children, Deborah Meyer, Denise Worthington, Joseph Braun and Michael Braun; her sons-in-law, James Meyer and Herb Worthington; her daughters-in-law, Petra Braun and Carol Braun; eight grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Mrs. Braun’s memory be made to the National Shrine of Saint Jude or the Saint Barnabas Hospice Care Center.

Services Were Held For George Weinberger

George Israel Weinberger of Livingston died on November 5 at the age of 81. A committal service was held on November 7. Born and raised in Bayonne, Mr. Weinberger graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1960. He earned a CPA and spent 46 years with J.H. Cohn & Co. in Roseland. Mr. Weinberger is survived by Sheila Gross, his wife of 55 years; his two children, Mark (Serilyn) and Sheryl; his two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Stanton Weinberger. Mr. Weinberger served as Men’s Club president; and treasurer and vice president of the Temple Board; at Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston. Contributions in Mr. Weinberger’s name may be made to Temple Beth Shalom or a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were made by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel.

Services Were Held For Matt Friedman

A funeral service was held Temple Emanu-El in Westfield on Monday, November 12, for Matt Friedman. He was 47 years old. A Livingston High School alum, Mr. Friedman graduated Rutgers University with a degree in English and statistics and served as swim co-captain, He was employed at Scholastic Books for over 20 years, most recently as education editor. He is survived by his wife, Laura; their children, Lilly and Aaron; his parents, Norm and Gloria Friedman; his sister, Laurie Harelick (Matthew), his parents-in-law, Kass Freeman (Bill) and David Morin (Pat); and his sister-in-law, Jen Schlegel. Donations in Mr. Friedman’s memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, nationalmssociety.org.

To Hold Funeral Mass For Jane Ginefra, 86

Jane J. Ginefra, formerly of Livingston, died at her home in Wilmington, Deleware on November 11. Born and raised in Orange, she also lived in Parsippany and Elkton, Maryland. Visitation will take place at the Codey & Jones Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Avenue in Caldwell on Saturday, November 17, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius R.C. Church, 219 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Mrs. Ginefra worked as a receptionist for F&G Reinsurance in Morristown. She was predeceased by her husband, Sabino (Samuel); a son, Nicholas; and her brothers and sisters, Anthony Mangnanti, Michael Mangnanti Josephine Fernekes and Angelena Renna. Surviving are her son, Patrick Ginefra (Beth Carlough), and two grandchildren. Donations in Mrs. Ginefra’s memory may be made to the Gift of Life Foundation at giftoflife.org.

Robert P. Logan, Jr., 42, of Orange, formerly of Livingston, died on Wednesday, November 7. Mr. Logan was the IT director for Ani Medical Group in Hazlet for many years. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Blackburn Jr.; his stepbrother, Edward C. Blackburn III; and his stepsister, Joyel Ryan. Services were held at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston on Monday, November 12.

Services Were Held For Harriett Diener, 87

Harriett Diener of Livingston died on October 27. Born and raised in Newark, she was a graduate of Weequahic High School and moved to Livingston after her marriage. Predeceased by her husband, Stanley, Mrs. Diener is survived by her daughter, Lori Steiner; her son, Steven; two sisters, Sandy Stein and Gloria Perl; and five grandchildren. Services were held on October 30 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Aiming High” in Our Schools

On Sunday, November 2, Livingston Public Schools superintendent Jim O’Neill wrote a letter to district parents, focusing on the “lack of civility in our public discourse,” and how it affects our students.

It can be all too easy for adults to forget that kids are always paying attention; hateful speech and aggressive discourse on social media, on TV, and even in person, has a cumulative effect. Children internalize these actions, and it inevitably frames the way they behave.

A Solemn Anniversary

This Sunday, November 11, is Veterans Day. In contrast to Memorial Day, which honors those military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country, Veterans Day pays tribute to all who have served in the military, past and present.

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, which was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I.

Surrey Lane Paving

SURREY LANE PAVING: On Wednesday, October 31, contractors were installing a new top course of asphalt paving on Surrey Lane between the street intersections with Chadwick Road and Fawn Drive. The work was being done by Ischia Construction and Paving as part of the Township of Livingston Surrey Lane street improvement project.

Lancer Harrier Philmon Mehari Qualifies for State Championships

Lancer cross country star Philmon Mehari qualified for the Group 4 state championships after a stellar performance in the sectionals.

“The first step in the three tier State Championship tournament is fought at the Sectional level,” coach James Memory said. “A top five team or a top ten individual finish is needed to advance to the next round at the Group 4 State Championship race at the famous Holmdel Park course.”
