We have been warned for months that it would arrive this fall, even as cases continued to drop this summer. Now it is impossible to deny: the “second wave” of COVID-19 is here. In the past month, Livingston reported 146 new cases. New Jersey has reported more than 3,000 daily cases for the first time since early May, with Governor Phil Murphy saying two weeks ago that Essex County was the “biggest concern” in the state; on Tuesday, the county recorded the most cases in a single day since the start of the pandemic. The U.S. has now reported 10 million total COVID-19 cases since March, of which nearly 240,000 people have died. Eight months into the pandemic and we are still breaking records.

Ethel A. Longo, age 89, of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday November 9, 2020.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated at St. Philomena Church, 396 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston, New Jersey, on Friday, November 13, 2020, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, New Jersey.

The family will receive their friends at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, New Jersey, on Thursday, November 12, 2020, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Ethel was born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late James and Jennie Longo. She received an associate’s degree from Hunter College. Ethel later moved to Manhattan, where she worked as a supervisor in pediatric cardiology at New York Hospital until her retirement in 1990.

Ruth Ellen Dunscombe, a 1969 graduate of Livingston High School, died on November 8. She was 70 years old.

Visitation will take place today, Thursday, November 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., at Lacey’s Home for Funerals in Forked River. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday, November 13, at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Pius in Forked River. Committal will follow at 12:15 p.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Ms. Dunscombe was the daughter of the late William E. and Jeanette C. Dunscombe and the sister of William E. Dunscombe (Veronica) of New Providence.

While in high school she won a Betty Crocker Award for her apple crisp. She then attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, majoring in English.

On Monday, November 2, the Livingston Township Council held a special meeting to approve a settlement agreement with Fair Share Housing Corporation concerning the town’s affordable housing obligations. The meeting was held virtually and may be viewed on the Livingston Township, NJ Facebook page.

The document has to be signed after it has been approved, at which point it will become a public document. That was not confirmed to have happened before the Tribune’s print deadline, as the FSHC also has to sign the document.

The agreement states that FSHC and Livingston acknowledge that the township does not accept the methodology or calculations proffered by FSHC, and both parties instead agree to the terms of the settlement agreement. While details have not yet been disclosed, the third round of the Mount Laurel Doctrine and Fair Share Housing Act of 1985 runs from 1999 through 2025.

A memorial service for Gloria Oertzen will be held at St. Philomena’s Church on Saturday, November 7, at 3 p.m. Friends are welcome to attend, and a repast will follow.

Mrs. Oertzen died on April 11 at the age of 92. A private graveside service had been held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Township Council will make appointments to Livingston’s many advisory committees at the township’s annual organizational meeting on New Year’s Day, and the Council hopes to attract new residents — and those who have not previously been active in the community — to serve on any of its many committees.

As we pass by Election Day without an official winner of the presidency, due to the influx of mail-in ballots as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the Donald Trump and Joe Biden rallies that took place at the Oval last Sunday.

Regardless of where one stands on the political spectrum, it is safe to say that, in recent years, there have been increasingly few people who fall in “the middle.” With so much strife in 2020, from the pandemic to social unrest, and countless other issues, it is hard to not have strong political opinions these days. As a result, our country feels as divided as it has been in decades. It can be hard to “look past” the politics of friends, families, and neighbors of late.

Mary A. Barras (née Flahive) passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Morristown Medical Center. She was 86 years old.

On February 27, 1934, Mary was born on her family farm in Glenderry, just west of Ballyheigue, in County Kerry, Ireland to her parents, John and Bridget Flahive. After receiving an education, Mary spent her teenage years working at a convent in Tralee, Ireland. Mary left the emerald isle and immigrated to Newark, New Jersey on August 11, 1951, where she met the love of her life, George Barras.

She often told loving stories of going to dances in Newark and frequenting McGovern’s Tavern with her future husband. George and Mary were married at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on November 10, 1956. After leaving Newark, George and Mary first moved to East Orange, before settling down in Livingston in 1967, where they raised their daughters and lived for the past 53 years.

FOOTBALL TEAM FALLS TO WEST ORANGE: The Livingston High School varsity football team was defeated by West Orange, 34-7, on Friday evening, October 30.
