This week, Jeff “the Coat Guy” Friedman, founder and director of Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), in his own words updates residents on the Livingston-based charity, which works to “provide for the poor, homeless and disenfranchised.” The organization holds a seasonal coat drive and a year ’round toiletries collection for the homeless.

With so many things happening now, I think it’s important for residents to know about the people of Livingston who have stepped forward to support LPI. I especially want to thank our stalwart volunteers for continuing to make another season of philanthropy happen right here in town.
Chair Donation

At the start of the Wednesday, March 13, Township Council meeting, Livingston Chief of Police Gary Marshuetz promoted three members of the department and swore in three new officers.

Promoted were Lt. Jack Hickey, Sgt. John Maggiulli, and Sgt. Steve McSpirit. Hickey was actually promoted in September but was unable to attend that ceremony. Together, the three have more than 90 years of experience working in the Livingston Police Department.

The three new officers sworn in were Officer Matthew DeBiasse, Officer Todd Compesi, and Officer Levecy DeOliveira.

Former Livingston resident Jack L. Atkins died Monday, March 18, at his home in Springfield. He was 70 years old.

Mr. Atkins grew up in Fair Lawn and Livingston. He attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He resided in Short Hills for 30 years before moving to Springfield in 2013.

After graduation, he joined his father in the real estate business which, after his brothers joined the firm, became TheAtkins Companies, a real-estate development and management firm headquartered in West Orange. Mr. Atkins was a principal in the firm until his death.

Mr. Atkins is survived by his father, Steve; his wife of 36 years, Melanie; three children, Doug, Scott (Carly), and Kim; three brothers, Dick (Joanna), Chick (Ellen) and Bob (Lisa); and two grandchildren.

A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, March 20, at Temple Sharey-Tefilo Israel in South Orange.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 20, for Bernard (Buddy) Dolowich of Livingston, who died on Monday, March 18.

Born in 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Dolowich was the husband of the late Madeline Dolowich and Dr. Susan Skolnick; the father of Jodi Aranowitz and Robin Netel; and is also survived by four granddaughters.

Donations in Mr. Dolowich’s memory can be made to the Lewey Body Dementia Association at lbda@lbda.org.

Last week, we applauded the Township Council for following through on several sustainability initiatives in town, and now that we have more information about the results of their energy aggregation search we must again take a moment to reflect on the great news.

We had hoped for an uptick in the use of renewable energy and some savings for our residents. We certainly did not expect to hear that the nearly three quarters of the town using Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) as their energy provider will now utilize 100 percent renewable energy, with the other quarter of residents with Jersey Central Power and Light (JCPL) nearly doubling the state’s sustainability requirements. In all, roughly 83 percent of Livingston’s energy will now come from wind, solar, and hydroelectric energy, as opposed to sources like coal and oil that are harmful to the environment.

Next Thursday evening, many Livingston parents will listen to an engaging talk about how to better support their children. The only question is which of two talks will they be attending? Two separate speakers will each hold presentations simultaneously next week, with both directed to parents about helping their children.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, Dianne Grossman will speak at the Senior, Youth and Leisure Services building, 204 Hillside Avenue. She is the mother of Mallory Grossman, a 12-year-old girl from Rockaway Township who was bullied by her peers and took her own life nearly two years ago. Since then Dianne has founded “Mallory’s Army” to combat bullying in schools, and her discussion will focus on encouraging families to avoid the “not my child syndrome,” the false belief that they are immune to the unthinkable happening.

F. James (Jim) White, 81, of Charlotte Hall, MD, formerly of Livingston, passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2019.

Born April 24, 1937, to Hazel Pellow White, he was a 1954 graduate of Bloomfield High School. A stand-out track athlete, he went to Springfield College, majored in physical education, and graduated with honors in 1958. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University.

Jim taught in the Bloomfield school system, with the majority of his years spent at Bloomfield High School, retiring in 1999. In 33 years as head coach of boys’ soccer, he won two state titles, leaving a legacy as one of the winningest coaches in New Jersey soccer history. He coached the Lady Bengals basketball team for 18 years, winning a state championship in 1989.

He raised his family in Livingston, where he resided for 40 years. He moved to Maryland after retirement.
