The Planning Board, at its meeting on Tuesday, December 15, discussed its 2021 meeting calendar; recommended the redevelopment of property on Peach Tree Hill Road, Block 3700, encompassing property on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, South LivingstonAvenue, andArden Road; and heard additional applications.

The meeting was livestreamed on Zoom, though, as ofpress time, it was not made available on the Livingston Township, NJ Facebook page, as it has been during the pandemic.

It is expected to be the final Planning Board meeting of 2020. The next scheduled meeting, a reorganizational meeting, is scheduled for January 5, 2021.

In honor of a lifetime of service, the Northfield Fire Station was renamed in honor of former Livingston Fire Chief and current fire inspector Craig Dufford.

Now named the Fire Chief Craig D. Dufford Northfield Station, it was dedicated this past Saturday in recognition of — and with appreciation for — a lifetime of dedicated service, tireless effort, and unending commitment to improving fire safety within Livingston.

“This honor was certainly deserving of a man with great integrity, honesty, professionalism, and most of all dedication to the fire service and his community.” current Fire Chief Chris Mullin said. “The honor is welldeserved and truly earned!”

Each New Year in Livingston, town officials and members of the public gather at the Senior/Community Center for the annual township reorganization meeting.

There is a celebratory feeling to this meeting, where Council members are sworn in, along with a new mayor and deputy mayor for the upcoming year (for 2021, Shawn Klein and Ed Meinhardt, respectively), and dozens of residents are officially appointed to committees, having made pledges to volunteer their time for the betterment of their community.

The public meeting is typically attended by hundreds of Livingston residents, and the hope for a prosperous New Year in town is palpable in the room.

Livingston surpassed 1,000 total COVID-19 cases this week, and with the holiday season in full swing, there is no reason to expect things to slow down anytime soon. It is on all of us to be responsible this holiday season, no matter how difficult it may be to do so.

There are clearly individuals who believe social distancing guidelines should not apply to them and their families, that they should still be able to travel, host large celebrations, and go about their daily lives without wearing masks. If this does not change, we are in for a long and brutal winter.

George G. Hill Jr. of Saint Augustine Beach, Florida, died on November 12, 2020 at the age of 67. He passed away in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

George was born in New Jersey in 1953. His parents were George G. Hill and his wife, Marcia Bissell Hill of East Orange, NJ. In 1955 they moved to Livingston, where George Jr. grew up. After graduating from college, George lived in South Brunswick, NJ and Washington, DC. He married Margianne (Margie) Wilson in 1979, after which they had a year’s honeymoon in Europe camping. The young couple then settled down in New Hampshire for 36 years. His wife, Margie, retired from teaching in 2016 and they moved to Saint Augustine Beach. George retired in 2017.

age 87, died Thursday, December 10, 2020, in Tampa, Florida.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Max and Sadie (Syd) Sugarman, he settled in Livingston, New Jersey, where he raised his family.

Wally was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended City College of New York, earning a master’s degree in finance and business.

He spent most of his career in corporate finance working for CBS, Ray Lass Department Stores, Liftman Jewelers and Bamberger’s, before branching out as an independent business owner.

Wally was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed playing competitive tennis. Inmost recent years, he was a dedicated fan on the sidelines, cheering on his three grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife of 57 years, June B. Sugarman, he is survived by his children, Rhonda Sugarman and Marc Sugarman (Maureen); his grandchildren, Eric, Alex, and Caitlyn; his sister, Gloria Rothstein (Mel); sister-in law, Nini Sugarman; and many nieces and nephews.

William P. Holey of Livingston, New Jersey, a retired Newark, New Jersey firefighter, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Philomena Church, 396 South LivingstonAvenue, Livingston, New Jersey, on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery East Hanover, New Jersey.

William was a retired Newark firefighter serving the city of Newark for 25 years before his retirement in 1985.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country proudly during the Korean War.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Holey, William is survived by his devoted children, Patricia (Joseph) Calafiore, William (Karen) Holey, Kenneth Holey; James (Sarah) Holey, and Kathleen (Jerel) DeBellonia; his loving grandchildren, Patrick, Joseph, Jessica, Bryan, Michael, Sean, Ethan, Justin, Ryan, Quinn, and Danny; and his dear sister, Dolores Lyons.

Betty M. Foster, a long-time resident of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020.

Relatives and close friends are invited for a funeral ceremony on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at St. Giles Chapel in Restland Memorial Park, 77 Deforest Avenue, East Hanover, New Jersey, at 11:30 a.m.

Betty was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and lived in Newark, New Jersey, before moving to Livingston in 1960. She moved to Roseland, New Jersey, in 2015 and lived there since then.

Betty, affectionately called Liz by family and friends, was an operator for Bell Telephone before becoming a nurse at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. She later became a Reservation Agent for Eastern Airlines.

Business owner, Livingston firefighter; he was so proud ofhis family and he lived a good life!

Herbert J. Mitschele Jr., 91, of Sunrise of Basking Ridge, NJ, formerly ofFar Hills, NJ, died suddenly and peacefully in his home, next to his wife, on Friday, December 11, 2020.

Herbert grew up in Livingston, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joyce (Weber) Mitschele; his brother, Lyle Mitschele; his sisters-in-law, Helene McGovern and Betty Weber; his children, Clinton Mitschele and his partner, Sheryl; Cheryl Eichmann and her husband, Paul; Louis Mitschele and his wife, Carol; Patricia Beaumont and her husband, Paul; and Lisa Campbell and her husband, Edward; and 33 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughters, Virginia Mitschele and Mary Evans, his sons, Herbert J. Mitschele III and Michael Mitschele, and his great-grandchild, Caleb Joseph.

Maureen A. Pizzi (née McKenna), age 89, ofLivingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020.

Maureen was born in Irvington, New Jersey. She had resided in Livingston for 63 years, where she raised her family and was active with St. Philomena’s Parish and School.

She brought joy to everyone she met, welcoming them into her home throughout the years. She enjoyed being surrounded by family and spent many summers at the Jersey Shore, where everyone was invited, no matter how big her family grew.

Maureen was predeceased by the love of her life and husband, “Her-Man” J. Pizzi. She is survived by her devoted children, Joanne (Steven) Jones, Dr. James (Leslie) Pizzi, Janet Duchene, Jacalyn (Alan) Dorflaufer and Jill (David) McLaughlin; and her loving grandchildren, Courtney, Jaclyn (Matthew), Alexandra, Christina (Mark), Scott, Brian, Brady, Kylie, Shane, Brandon, and Zachary.
