Fire Department Extricates Victim from Vehicle, Investigates Alarms from Smoke, Power Outages

The Livingston Fire Department responded to a three-vehicle accident at 635 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue on Friday, September 26. A Buick LeSabre, driven by Antonio Antoniello, 92, of East Hanover, struck a tractor-trailer, which was attempting to pull off to the east-bound shoulder of Old West Mt. Pleasant Avenue. The rear of the trailer pivoted into the lane of traffic, where it collided with a Buick Enclave, driven by Dianne Orangeo, 54, of Florham Park.

School Superintendent Announces Ending of Mid-Term Exams at LHS

The September 29 meeting of the Board of Education began with short stories told by Harrison School Students. Fourth graders Manya Sur and Ariana Batista, and fifth graders Matthew Hostetler, Athena Thai and Jean Paul Monter Nores were invited by teacher Lynn Sorrentino to share stories they had told as third graders during an annual storytelling program. The children demonstrated both the art of storytelling and confidence in public speaking.

Private Services For Kenneth Schweiger

Kenneth E. Schweiger, 90, of Whippany, formerly of Livingston, died on Monday, September 22. Services were private. Born in Brooklyn, he served in the US Navy during World War II. He later became a member of the Whippany Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as a Post Commander. After attending Princeton, Mr. Schweiger later became director of industrial relations for the National Association of Manufacturers. He later served in the same capacity with Singer Corporation and finally for his own firm, Management Consultants. Predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (Lea), Mr. Schweiger is survived by his daughters: Janet Kerr and her husband, Thomas; Dorothy Sobieski and her husband, Kenneth; Lea Bumber and her husband, Edward; and Carol Thompson. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.

LHS Girls' Volleyball Team Event Supports Breast Cancer Awareness

When it comes to high school girls' volleyball, the Mount Saint Dominic Lions and the Livingston Lancers are fierce competitors on the court. Off the court, however, they are teaming up to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization and breast cancer awareness with their Pink Event. The fund-raiser will held on Saturday, October 11, in the Livingston High School gym. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in North New Jersey Foundation.

The Fire Department’s annual Open House will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. at headquarters station on South Livingston Avenue. This year’s Fire Safety campaign focuses on "Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month" to keep families safe from fire dangers. School Board Candidates Discuss Reasons for Seeking Election

In an effort to help the community compare the two candidates, Buddy August and Barry Funt, for the one full term on the Board of Education, which will be decided in the November 4 election, the West Essex Tribune, with the help of the League of Women Voters, has posed a series of four questions to the candidates. A one year term and a two year term will be filled by Ronnie Konner and Ron Spring, respectively. Both are running unopposed and will make statements in the week before the election.

LHS Tennis Team Splits Week's Matches

The Lady Lancer tennis team won two and lost two matches in county and regular season play this week. Livingston defeated Cedar Grove in the Essex County Tournament before losing to Glen Ridge in the county quarterfinals. The team defeated Caldwell in a Super Essex Conference match before losing to Mt. St. Dominic in a regular season match. Livingston has a 3-8 win-loss record, 1-3 in the conference.

League of Women Voters Holds Town Council Candidates’ Forum

The seven candidates for three seats on the Livingston Township Council spoke at the annual Livingston League of Women Voters (LWV) Candidates' Night on September 17. The audience filled the Livingston High School Chorus Room, and the evening was recorded by L-TV. The seven candidates – three Democrats, three Republicans, and one Independent, spoke about themselves, their candidacies and qualifications, and answered questions at the forum. The election will take place on November 4.
