Dinosaur Park Proposed at Riker Hill

Article Image Alt Text

At the Township Council conference meeting on Monday, October 15, Council members said Essex County executive Joseph DiVincenzo has started preliminary cleanup and surveying of Riker Hill Art Park. The work comes less than a week after DiVincenzo attended a meeting in Livingston to discuss residents’ ideas for renovating the park.

At the conference meeting, the Council discussed a county request to install a four-way stop at the intersection of the entrance to Riker Hill Art Park and Homestead Terrace. There are currently stop signs on the entrance road, but not Homestead, and the Council members questioned if adding signs would inconvenience homeowners on the roadway. They agreed to ask the county if emphasizing the existing stop signs with additional signage would be sufficient.

Article Image Alt Text

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc., has, for the first time, been able to purchase items for the homeless thanks to residents’ donations, announced director Jeff “The Coat Guy” Friedman.
“While Philanthropies volunteers have used personal funding to provide new items for the ‘poor, homeless, and disenfranchised’ over the past seven seasons, the purchase of bedbug proof mattress covers for The Apostles’ House in Newark was made possible by local monetary donations,” Friedman said. “That’s because Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) is now an official 501(c)(3) charity, able to legally accept cash donations. May I suggest keeping a portion of one’s philanthropic giving local?”

County Officials Outline Plans To Improve Riker Hill Art Park

Essex County officials held a public meeting at Town Hall on Tuesday, October 9, to present plans for improvements to Riker Hill Art Park with roughly two dozen neighbors and residents in attendance.

Essex County executive Joseph DiVincenzo noted that a meeting had been held in January to solicit public input on improving the site, which was formerly a Nike missile base and is currently an artists’ colony. Based on neighbors’ concerns and suggestions, a preliminary plan was subsequently developed which calls for renovations to the existing buildings and the creation of a community garden and a scenic overlook. The county has set aside a budget of $4 million to make the improvements. County officials hope to have construction underway by July 1, 2019.
