Private Services Held For Venisa Tyson

Venisa Camille (Henderson) Tyson, 58, of Livingston died on Wednesday, July 28 at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains.

She was born in Hartford, Connecticut to James S. Henderson and the late Iris Wilson Henderson. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Rosemont College and resided in Orange before moving to Livingston five years ago.

Mrs. Tyson formerly owned and operated a McDonald’s restaurant in Paterson.

Camille was the mother of Candace Henderson-Brooks of Atlanta, Georgia, and Brett Lauren Tyson of East Orange; the daughter of James V. (Kelli) Henderson of Livingston; the sister of James V. Henderson of Nashville, Tennessee, Juanita Collum of Yazoo City, Mississippi, Alisa C. (Doug) Harrison of North Haledon, and Rita D. (Frank) Davis and Janice E. (Kirk) Fleming, both of Plainfield. She is also survived by four grandchildren.

Services and cremation are private.

Former Resident Rita Bauman Dies

Rita C. Bauman, a former Livingston resident, has died at the age of 99.

Born in Woodhaven, Queens, she is survived by her daughters, Linda Sperling, and Anita Holtzberg and her husband, Larry Holtzberg. Mrs. Bauman was the wife of Moe Bauman and had three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

One of the original members of Weight Watchers New Jersey, she had also been a member of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston for more than 30 years. For the past 11 years, she resided in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Graveside Service Held for Phyllis Sobel

Phyllis J. Sobel, the first baby born in New York City on January 1, 1929 to Murray and Ann Kaufman in Brooklyn, died on July 22.

She resided in Livingston since 1952.

Mrs. Sobel was married to the late Irwin Sobel for 72 years, and was the mother of sons David and Mark; daughter-in-laws Andrea and Wendy; the grandmother of four; and the greatgrandmother of four.

Irwin and Phyllis moved to Livingston in 1952 and remained residents through the remainder of their lives.

A graveside service was held on Sunday, July 25. Funeral arrangements were by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel.

Donations in Mrs. Sobel’s name may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America.

Will Hold Mass For Gustav Schmidt

Gustav (Gus) Schmidt, 95, of Livingston, died on Saturday, July 24. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church today, Thursday, July 29, at 10 a.m.

Born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, Mr. Schmidt attended West Side High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Force, serving from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He graduated from Montclair State

He graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in education and taught history at Charlton Street School in Newark. He later received a master’s degree in administration from Seton Hall University.

During the summers of 1960 and 1961, Mr. Schmidt started and ran the Pioneer Trails Day Camp for the West Essex YMCA. The following 17 summers, he was director of children’s programs at the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, New York. After teaching in Newark for 20

Gary J. Solomon

Gary J. Solomon passed away on July 22, at his home in Parkland, Florida, at the age of 80.

He was born in Newark and later became a 41 year resident of Livingston.

Mr. Solomon worked at Prudential and Home Depot before retiring in 2005. He loved working on his Volkswagens, telling jokes and watching NBA basketball games.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Sharyn, of 45 years. Surviving Mr. Solomon are his daughters, Dr. Tara Solomon of Parkland, Florida; Dena Babjak, of Wayne, New Jersey; and Sandi Ricci of Parkland, Florida. He was also the grandfather of Austin, Ashley, Emma and Jackson.

Mr. Solomon will be laid to rest at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Mass Was Offered For Carol M. Fay

Carol M. Fay (née Walsh), 85, a former long-time resident of Livingston, died on July 17.

Born and raised in Montclair, Mrs. Fay lived in Livingston for 35 years before moving to Toms River and West Caldwell. Prior to her retirement, she was a bank teller for Mayflower Savings and Loan in Livingston.

A funeral Mass was offered on Wednesday, July 21, at St. Raphael’s Church, Livingston, with interment following at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair.

Mrs. Fay was pre-deceased by her husband of 48 years, James Fay Sr., and her siblings, John Walsh, Edward Walsh, William Walsh, Marilyn St. Jean, and Jerome Walsh. She is survived by her children,

Graveside Service Held For Stuart Arnold Blum

Stuart Arnold Blum of Norfolk, Virginia, formerly of Livingston, died July 7 at the age of 62.

He was born to Stanley and Marilyn Blum on November 25, 1958 in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Livingston High School in 1976.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Jaime Spiegel-Blum, and his mother, Marilyn Blum.

Mr. Blum is survived by his children, Ian Spiegel-Blum and his wife, Elizabeth, and Noah Spiegel-Blum; his father, Stanley Blum; his brother, Michael Blum and his wife, Benita; his girlfriend, Christina Brennell; and many friends, including his Olive Garden family.

A graveside service was held for him at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk on Tuesday, July 13.

Services to Be Held For Victor Valente

Victor P. Valente, 82, of Hyde Park, New York, formerly of Livingston, died on July 11.

He worked at Newark and La-Guardia Airports for American Airlines, starting in the freight department and eventually retiring as a passenger services supervisor. After retiring, he and his late wife, Victoria, moved to Hyde Park to help their daughter with her business.

Valente was born in Newark, where he attended East Side High School. He lived in Livingston and Naples, Florida, before moving to Hyde Park eight years ago.

Valente was predeceased by his wife, Victoria, and his sister and brother-in-law, Walter and Aurora MacFarlane. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Valente, and her partner, Eric Miller; his sister, Aida Souza; and four nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday, July 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home, 801 D Street in Belmar.

Lisa Chaiken Schwarz

On July 9, 2021, Lisa Chaiken Schwarz of Livingston, beloved wife and mother, passed away at age 68.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lisa studied pharmacy. On July 27, 1975, Lisa married Mark Schwarz. They moved to Livingston, New Jersey, in 1977, where they raised their cherished children, Alex and Naomi.

Lisa loved to cook, read, crochet, and knit. Most of all, she loved her family. Her quick wit punctuated every conversation, keeping it spirited and welcoming. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.

Mass Was Celebrated For Joseph McArdle

Joseph J. McArdle, Jr., a longtime Livingston resident, died on Thursday, July 1. He was 79 years old.

Born in Newark and raised in Orange, Mr. McArdle retired as claims manager for the Prudential Property and Casualty Insurance Co. in Fairfield, and was an active member of the Sons of Italy Padre Pio Lodge in East Hanover.

Mr. McArdle was married to Diane (née Vaccarella) McArdle for 41 years, and was the father of Joseph P. McArdle (Korena), Courtney M. McArdle, and the late Michelle A. McArdle. He had one grandchild.

He was the brother of John McArdle, “Jeanie” Eugenia Hoesly, “Ebby” Mary Monahan, “Bobby” Robert McArdle, Kevin McArdle, Gary McArdle and the late Eileen McArdle, and Todd McArdle, and cherished grandfather of Michelle M. McArdle.
