LANCERS WIN ON ICE: The Livingston High School ice hockey team defeated Verona/Glen Ridge, 6-1, at the CodeyArena on Monday evening, January 18. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing academic institutions across the country to send students home, many spring sports seasons came to an abrupt end. For the first time in many years, spring studentathletes found themselves displaced from their sports and their teammates for the foreseeable future.

For Muhlenberg sophomore women’s lacrosse player Emily Gaffney of Livingston, a spring season without lacrosse was not an option.

She discovered ReLax Collections, a nonprofit foundedby William Dadouris, a men’s lacrosse player and 2020 graduate of Moravian College. Dadouris founded ReLax Collections as a high school student in 2014, and has since collected over $1,500,000 worth of new and used lacrosse equipment to support over 35 teams across the United States and in 16 other countries as they “grow the game.”

The Livingston-based IndoBikers team members made the most of 2020, using their bicycles to keep their spirits high and their bodies fit.

Despite the pandemic, the riders regularly completed long trips throughout the spring, summer and fall. They expanded their rides beyond Livingston, sometimes traveling to distant counties.

All team rides were outdoors and socially distanced.

A Heritage Middle School student hit his first-ever hole-in-one earlier this month, just one week after his Bar Mitzvah. OnNovember 7, Jordan Harris, an avid golfer, hit the ball in the cup on the seventh hole, a 135-yard par three, at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell. He used a 5-hybrid and played with his dad and two friends.

“I couldn’t see if it was going to go in or not because it’s an uphill hole,” Harris said. “I didn’t think it was going to be a hole in one.”

LANCER SPIRIT: The Lancer football team played its last home game on Friday, November 20, and the cheerleaders, color guard, and band performed for the last time this season. Oishik Mukherjee, an eighth grader at Heritage Middle School in Livingston, is the new 2020 Under 2000 New Jersey state table tennis champion.

The 91st New Jersey State Championships Tournament, a USATT (USA Table Tennis) sanctioned two-star event for New Jersey residents only, was held October 31 and November 1 at the New Jersey Table Tennis Club in Westfield. A total of 36 players participated in eight categories this year, under strict COVID-19 guidelines.

On Tuesday, November 3, the Livingston High School boys’ varsity cross country team traveled by bus to Branch Brook Park in Newark for the last time this season. The boys’ team competed in the American Conference Championships, the most competitive of the three conferences, and finished the race in seventh place with 188 total team points.

Lancer sophomore Christopher Bonnar jumped out to a fast start in the varsity race from the very beginning. Bonnar was third at the mile mark and never slowed down throughout the race, running his first mile in 5:55. He then picked up the pace on the second mile pulling ahead of his competition and splitting a 5:53 second mile. After the two-mile marker, Bonnar held his lead against his competition and won the race by two seconds. After merging the two American Conference races, Bonnar finished 24th with an overall time of 18:27, which was, said coach Jim Memory, “A great achievement for a sophomore.”
