Council Members meet with Board

Two members of the Township Council met informally with two members of the Board of Education recently to discuss items of mutual concern. The meeting did not have to be publicly announced under the "Sunshine Law," because less than a majority of each of the bodies attended the meeting.

The Coat Drive is being conducted in partnership with the West Essex Tribune, which serves as a drop-off point for donations.

LHS Among Top Districts In State for AP Offerings

At Livingston High School, 93.9 per cent of AP students received scores of 3 or more on the AP exams, said interim superintendent Jim O'Neill as he introduced the topic to the Board of Education meeting on November 10. This compares to 74.2 per cent in the state and 61 per cent in the nation. "The AP exams are long-standing, well recognized tests," he said, and the district should be very proud of its record.

Residents Present Contrasting Views Over Dividing of Edgemere Road

During its conference meetings, the Township Council usually meets in the conference room adjacent to the court chambers; however, on Monday evening, the meeting had to be moved into the courtroom to accommodate the large number of people attending. Almost all of them were there to present their views on the possible re-closing of Edgemere Road.

Funeral Services For Irwin Jordan

Irwin Jordan, 88, died on October 28. Services were held on Thursday October 30, at B’nai Abraham Memorial Park in Union. Raised in Newark, NJ, Mr. Jordan resided in Livingston with his wife of 65 years, Rhona. A veteran of World War II and a graduate of Rutgers University, he owned Jordan Jewelers, a three-generation family business in Newark for 60 years. In addition to his wife Rhona, Mr. Jordan is survived by his three children, Arlene (and Dr. Andrew) Brafman of West Orange; Bruce (and Lauren) Jordan of Boca Raton, Forida; and Nancy (and Dr. Howard) Silberstein of Rochester, NewYork; seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Fernandez, Klein, and Meinhardt Elected to Council; August, Spring and Konner Returned to School Board

With only 25% of the eligible voters going to the polls, the race for Township Council was decided on Tuesday by a very narrow vote while the Board of Education election, held at the same time, was much more clear cut. Voters sent Charles "Buddy" August back to the Board of Education by a solid majority. Without the count of mail-in votes, August received 2,897 votes to Barry Funt's 1,463.

DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT of an antique car that caught fire on Sunday afternoon, November 2, at the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue. Paul Smith of 21 Crescent Road called the Livingston Fire Department at about 3:40 p.m., reporting that he had heard a bang and then had seen flames coming from the engine compartment of his 1955 Buick Roadmaster.
