two House Fires and Lightning Storm Damage keep Volunteer Firefi ghters Busy During Week

Livingston volunteer fi refi ghters answered two general alarms this week, extinguishing two residential fires, one of which resulted in the death of the family cat. Fire Chief Chris Mullin commended a neighbor, whose quick actions reduced the damage from a fi re at 24 Yorktown Terrace, the home of Gemma McSweeney, on Wednesday, July 23.

Sunday Dodgers Shut-Out Verona Twins

The Livingston Dodgers of the U.S. Over Thirty Baseball League, Sunday Division, improved their second place record to 11-4 with a 7-0 shut out win over the Verona Twins on Sunday, July 27, in Livingston. José Martinez won his ninth game on the mound against no losses. The tall right-hander surrendered only three hits while walking none. The Dodger defense, meanwhile, backed him up with three double plays.

The Livingston Jr. American Legion captured the Essex County championship with a 5-2 win over Belleville. Smoke Detectors Work

A tragedy was averted this week when a husband and wife were awakened in the early morning hours and alerted by the incessant beeping of a ten dollar smoke detector to a raging fire in their home. An Essex Fells woman was not so lucky. She was found dead in her bedroom after firefighters extinguished a massive blaze there. Although there was no report of whether or not she had a smoke detector, the comparisons of the two incidents in one week is easy to make.
