An Evening in Livingston

Late in June, more than 500 people gathered at the Oval on a hot and humid weekday evening to celebrate International Yoga Day. The event, which was hosted by Sanskriti of New Jersey and designed to promote the health benefits of yoga, featured nearly two dozen instructors offering free classes of varying difficulty levels and styles. By all accounts, it was a smashing success and may be the start of a new annual event in town.

That is far from all that was occurring on that typical summer evening, however. Just surrounding the Oval alone, dozens of residents were walking around the main field, while others played games on the lawn within it. People sat on the benches that line the Oval, reading or chatting.

State: Masking Not Required For Upcoming School Year

As of Wednesday morning, June 30, the Livingston Health Department has reported that a total of 2,140 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March. 88 of those residents have died as a result of the virus. Compared to the same time last week, there are three new cases, with no additional deaths. In the past month, there have been 13 cases.

The state currently lists no active cases within the township’s long term care (LTC) facilities.

For the upcoming school year in September, which will be fully inperson, masking will not be mandatory unless a school district requires it as part of its own protocols, according to an announcement by Governor Phil Murphy on Monday.

Independence Day Celebration Daytime Activities on July 4

Livingston’s Independence Day celebration will return this year, and will be held in two parts, explained Scott Maynard, co-chairman of the July 4 Celebration Committee. The daytime events will take place on Sunday, July 4, and the evening events – including the mainstage entertainment and fireworks program – will be held Sunday, September 12.

Part of the decision to separate the daytime and evening events came as the result of research from other towns near Livingston, Maynard said. “Many of these communities had canceled their entire July 4 celebrations for 2021. The potential of having overwhelming crowds coming from outside of Livingston posed a security and health threat for our fireworks program on July 4. Scheduling the evening program for September 12 gives us the time needed to do it safely – and do it great!”

Sixth Graders Graduate from L.E.A.D. Program

Sixth Graders Graduate from L.E.A.D. Program

The sixth graders at Mt. Pleasant Middle School worked throughout the school year with the L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) officers from the Livingston Police Department, Officer Joy Klapal and Officer Ralph Kolbusz.

The program culminated last week with two events. On Tuesday, June 22, the students had a party with the L.E.A.D. officers, with pizza provided by the HSA of Mt. Pleasant Middle School. During the pizza party, two students from each class received a prize for writing the best L.E.A.D. essays. All the essay winners were then entered into a raffle for the grand prize, a $100 gift card donated by Livingston PBA #263. Principal Bronawyn O’Leary drew the winning ticket, which went to Jon Chin.
