The Livingston High School girls’ varsity tennis team won matches against Montclair and Caldwell. The team has a 3-1 win-loss record.

Livingston 3.5, Montclair 1.5: A very competitive match saw Livingston’s Emily Sze win first singles against Maddie Schanen, 6-1, 6-0, and Montclair’s Chloe Jordan win second singles 6-1, 6-2 against Selena Zhu.

Both doubles matches were decided in three sets. Livingston’s Stephanie Li and Allison Miller won first doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and Bella Flaum and Sasha Vaysmanwon second doubles, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. The Lancers trailed late in both deciding sets with Montclair holding a match point at second doubles.

Franklyn J. Lodge III, 73, of Livingston died on Monday, October 12.

Prayers will be offered at QuinnHopping Funeral Home Thursday, October 15, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Upper Montclair.

Mr. Lodge attended NJIT and was an engineer with Foster-Wheeler in Clinton for 35 years before retiring in 2008.

He was the husband for 50 years to Winifred Dockery Lodge; the father of Keith (Laura) Lodge; the grandfather of two; and the brother of Donald Lodge.

The Livingston High Schoolboys’ cross country team started its season last week in the first of four conference dual meets at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

This season, the Lancers are competing in the American Division, which has the top teams in the Super Essex Conference.

The Lancers raced well, despite coming up short against Millburn High School and Newark Academy.

On Sunday, October 11, a plaque was installed at the Heritage Middle School courts to honor Howie Gottlieb, a “founding father” of Livingston pickleball, who died in February. About 100 people attended the plaque unveiling, all wearing masks. Rita Y. Snyder, née Korn, 89, of Livingston, died on October 1, 2020. Born in the Bronx, New York, she formerly lived in Springfield, New Jersey, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Together with her beloved husband of many years, Sol, who predeceased her, Rita founded and operated the family business, Livingston Bagel.

Rita is survived by her sister, Josie Lemberg; son, David Snyder; daughter-in-law, Margie Snyder; grandchildren, Brooke (Daniel) Blue, Blake Snyder, Jack Snyder, and Clint Snyder; and great-granddaughters, Sloane Blue and Paige Blue. Rita was predeceased by her son, Alan.

Private graveside services were held on October 4, 2020, with arrangements by the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregation B’nai Jeshrun Rabbi Barry H. Greene Early Childhood Center, 1025 South Orange Avenue, Short Hills, New Jersey 07078.

Murray Lieber, a 52-year resident of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away Sunday, October 11 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. He was 82.

Murray was born in The Bronx on May 26, 1938, the youngest of three sons of Samuel and Minnie (Altman) Lieber. He was raised in The Bronx and graduated from Yeshiva University High School For Boys in Washington Heights, New York.

Murray then attended Fordham University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, working nights in a neighborhood drug store to finance his education. While at Fordham, Murray was a member of the varsity fencing team, earning MVP honors in 1959, his senior year. He also joined the ROTC and, upon graduation, spent four years in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps.

Gloria Maria Mocenigo, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on October 12, 2020. Formerly of Livingston, NJ, she died of natural causes, just two weeks shy of her 98th birthday.

Mrs. Mocenigo will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where she will join her husband of 61 years, Ferruccio (1915-2007), and her father, Eugene DiRienzo (1887-1930). A private graveside service will be held in light of the current pandemic.

Born Gloria DiRienzo on October 27, 1922, she spent the first eight years of her life in New York City. After the sudden death of her father in 1930, Gloria moved with her mother; Adele, and her brother to Rome, where she lived until 1947. While working at the Italian oil company Agipshe, she met her future husband, Ferruccio Mocenigo, whom she married in 1946.

It has been a strange year, for many reasons, so it should not surprise us when we have to make unexpected adjustments to our production schedule. Historically, the West Essex Tribune offers its endorsement of local candidates — specifically the Township Council and Board of Education races — in the final edition before Election Day. That was the plan for this year as well, even when it became clear that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our state’s elections would be done entirely by mail (those who show up to polling stations on Election Day may fill out provisional ballots).

Vocabulary.com offers the following to describe disenfranchisement; “Being disenfranchised is no fun. The rules work against you, your rights are constantly violated, and you have little power to change your life for the better. The Old French word enfranchir means ‘to make free,’ and when you add the negative prefix dis-, disenfranchised means ‘made unfree.’ A disenfranchised population doesn’t rest easy.”

This week, Livingston Public Schools is reporting its first COVID-19 cases of individuals that were within a school building.

In a message posted last Friday on the district website, Livingston Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Block confirmed the first COVID-19 case. By Tuesday, prior to deadline, there were a total of three confirmed cases of individuals who have been in school or participated in school related activities. The district did not say if the cases were students or faculty members.
