At 1:24 p.m. on Friday, January 22, Livingston Police officers responded to a one-vehicle accident on Bonnyview Drive. Ariana Matthew, 19, of Livingston was operating a 2013 Honda when the vehicle struck a utility pole. The vehicle and pole were severely damaged. Matthew could not explain how the accident happened, but she may have been distracted by a dog that was in her car, police said. The driver and dog were not injured.

John Michael Ambielli, 78, of Califon and Bar Harbor, Maine, died at his home in Califon on January 21, 2021, following a battle with cancer.

He was born in Newark, in 1942, the son of Frederick and Sylvia (Giuliano) Ambielli.

In 1959 he graduated from Livingston High School and went on to serve in the New Jersey National Guard. He joined his father and brother in the family business, eventually growing their company into CustomAlloy Corporation, a global manufacturing company specializing in pipe fittings and forgings.

He also served as an elder at First Christian Assembly in Plainfield.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; five children, Karen Fuller (Stuart), JohnAmbielli (Celia), Laura Swisher (Paul), Lynn Rampacek (Mark), and Sharon Dubuc (Seth); 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Adam Ambielli and his sister, Lin Berg.

Vera Deter, (nee Curcione) age 90, of Livingston, died Wednesday January 20. AMass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Philomena Church, Livingston, on Saturday, January 23. Interment followed at Gate ofHeaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Mrs. Deter had resided in Livingston for over 60 years and was a member of St. Philomena’s Parish.

She is survivedby her husband of 70 years, Ralph E. Deter Sr.; her children, Debbie Seay, Gary (Carol) Deter, Ralph Deter Jr., and Barbara (Greg) Menarguez; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her late daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Al Gebhardt.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

Marie E. Mancino of Livingston died January 21 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. She was 92 years old.

Visitation was held at the QuinnHopping Funeral Home ofLivingston on Wednesday, January 27. A Mass of Christian Burial was then offered at St. Philomena’s Church, Livingston, followed by interment at Gate ofHeaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Mrs. Mancino was born October 4, 1928, in Newark, and attended Barringer High School. She lived in Newark until 1968, then relocated to Livingston, where she and her family resided permanently.

Mrs. Mancino was a singer who had performed at Carnegie Hall and participated in the Essex Opera Guild. She was employed by the city of Newark, before retiring to raise her two children. She was a long-time supporter for the Deborah Heart and Lung Association and a member ofthe Livingston Chapter of AARP.

Domenico D. Carnevale “Don” age 84, ofLivingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, January 22, 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Philomena Church, Livingston, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, New Jersey.

Don was born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, where he enjoyed spending time with the boys from the Third Ward. Don served his country proudly in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. He lived in Livingston, New Jersey, for more than 56 years and was employed at the U.S. Post Office in East Orange, New Jersey, for 35 years before retiring as a supervisor at the age of 56.

With great sadness, the Martin Family announces the passing of Janet Ruth Martin. Janet was a beautiful, kind-hearted woman whose grace, strength, faith, and courage were admired by all. Janet died in St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after succumbing to cancer. Her loving husband of 58 years, Kenneth Martin Jr., was by her side.

Due to the pandemic, the funeral and services will be for immediate family only. However, a Memorial Service celebrating Janet’s life will be held on May 23, 2021 at the Livingston United Methodist Church, where all are welcome.

Janet was 76 years old and the proud mother of four children, nine grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. She was generous with her time and her spirit. She helped and touched the lives of many people — the world is truly a better place because she lived.

John Joseph Mount “Jack,” age 80, of West Orange, formerly of Caldwell and Winfield Park, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 10, 2021, surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Aloysius Church, 219 Bloomfield Avenue Caldwell, on Friday, January 15. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Jack, who lived in Livingston for most of his adult life, spent his youth in Caldwell, graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in 1958, where he was a three sportAll State/County player in football, baseball and basketball. Although drafted by the Milwaukee Braves, he decided to continue his football career at Villanova University, where he participated in the 1961 Sun Bowl.

This Sunday, January 31, is the deadline to get your dog or cat licensed for the year.

Licensing your dog is not just a good idea; it’s the law. The township requires that every dog, age seven months and older, be licensed and immunized against rabies. Licensing also enables dog owners to get a pass to the Livingston Dog Park. Those who do not obtain current licenses are subject to fines and possible court appearances.

It is no secret that the Livingston Mall has seen better days. Just prior to the pandemic, Sears announced that it would be closing; Lord and Taylor closed more recently. Malls in general have been hurt in the past decade by a growing increase in online shopping. Something needed to be done to support Livingston’s single largest taxpayer, which is why we were thrilled to hear, late last year, that a committee had been formed to discuss what could be done to support the mall.

Last week, the 16-person committee announced the fruits of its initial work, recommending that the Township Council designate the mall district as an area in need of redevelopment. This is all preliminary, with many more steps to take, but we think this is a fantastic idea.
