RTS (Recycle Track Systems NJ, LLC) became Livingston’s garbage collection vendor, effective Tuesday, September 1.

The Township’s current five-year solid waste collection contract with Waste Industries ended as of August 31. The township’s purchasing manager issued bid specifications and a request for bids for the new contract period. RTS was the lower of the two bids received for this service, and were awarded the contract.

There are no changes to the collection zones or scheduled days for pickups.

The Lancers football team is preparing for the upcoming season. Through Sunday, September 13, coaches may only be in virtual contact with student athletes. Practice will start on Monday, September 14, with an optional heat acclimatization practice on Friday, September 11. Susan Gechtman (nee Nieuzytek), 63, of Morris Plains, died on Friday, August 28.

Born in Newark to the late Nancy and Steven Nieuzytek, Mrs. Gechtman grew up in Livingston and was a graduate of Livingston High School. She lived for many years in Morris Plains.

She is survived by her husband, Peter Gechtman; and her siblings, Kathleen Rice, Scott Nieuzytek and his wife, Naomi. She was predeceased by her brother, Steven Nieuzytek.

Mrs. Gechtman was cremated and there will be no service at this time. The family intends to celebrate her life at a later date.

The Livingston League of Women Voters (LWV) will conduct a debate for the candidates for the open seat on District 4 of the Essex County Commissioners (formerly known as the Board of Chosen Freeholders) on Wednesday evening, September 16, at 8 p.m. via Zoom.

District 4 includes Livingston, the Caldwells, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Millburn, Roseland, Verona, and West Orange. Incumbent Democrat Leonard M. Luciano is being challenged by Republican Adam Kraemer. Both have ties to Livingston.

The Board consists of nine members in total, four of whom are elected at-large. Running for at-large re-election are Democrats Brendan Gill, Romaine Graham, Rufus Johnson, and Patricia Sebold of Livingston, against Republican challengers Alexandra Campisi, Gynise Gotto, Monique Headen, and Bernarda Quezada.

Believe it or not, it is that time of year again. It may not seem it, but soon the leaves will start to change, the temperatures will drop, and everything from coffee to hand soap will have the faint smell of pumpkin spice. That’s right, we are talking about flu season.

While seasonal influenza viruses are detected year-round, they are most common in the fall and winter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone older than six months should get a flu vaccine every “flu season” to help prevent the contraction and spread of the virus.

Every fall in which Livingston has a contested Board of Education or Township Council election, the West Essex Tribune provides the candidates the opportunity to share their thoughts in the paper, through a series of questions leading up to the November election. Denver Wallace, 93, passed away peacefully on August 8th in his home at Brightview Senior Living in North Andover, Massachusetts. Born in Johnson City, Tennessee, he was the son of Octor Hugh and Maude Wallace. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles L. Wallace.

Denver grew up in Johnson City, where he and his family were active members of the First Methodist Church. Throughout his life, Denver was active in various churches, where he worshipped, read scripture and sang in the choir. He was an active member of his beloved First Church Boxford since 1976 when he moved to Massachusetts.

Denver joined the Navy after graduating from high school. Upon completion of his military service, Denver earned his bachelor of science in business and graduated in 1950 from East Tennessee State University.

(LPI) founder and director Jeff Friedman delivers back-to-school backpacks stuffed with school supplies, cases of bottle baby formula, basic family toiletries, and more to Newark Emergency Services for Families (NESF) on Broad Street. NESF also received more than 1,000 name-brand baked goods packages from LPI’s partnership with Bimbo Bakeries in Maine.
