As of Wednesday morning, September 16, the Livingston Health Department has reported that a total of 534 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March. 72 of those residents have died as a result of the virus. Compared to the same time last week, there are three new cases, with no additional deaths.

New Jersey’s quarantine travel advisory has removed six states and added Puerto Rico since last week. There are now 30 states and territories on the list. California, Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, and Ohio have been removed from the list. Individuals coming from the states and territories listed on the advisory should self-quarantine for 14 days. To be included on the travel ban, a state t a A F a r or territory must surpass ten average daily positive COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. New Jersey’s ban runs concurrently with New York and Connecticut.

HICKORY PLACE PAVING: a new asphalt binder paving course was installed on Hickory Place near its intersection with Wychwood Road on Wednesday, September 9.

The Livingston Planning Board met virtually on Tuesday, September 15, to discuss two matters. The meeting was livestreamed on the Livingston Township, NJ Facebook page.

The Board first reviewed ordinance 14-2020, which had previously been read by the Township Council. The Board is required to review the ordinance to ensure that it is in keeping with the township’s master plan. It creates a new section, 170-107.2, to make 457 and 461 South Livingston Avenue a mixed-use zone with an overlay. The properties currently contain single-family residences in lots 62 and 63, just east of the ShopRite entrance on South Livingston Avenue before Wardell Road.

The Livingston Public School district expects to bring pre-kindergarten through grade two students, and self-contained special education students, back to in-person hybrid learning on Monday, September 21, said superintendent of schools Matt Block at the September 9 Board of Education meeting.

“We will transition to the hybrid model beginning with these students,” he said.

Block later said, in a video address on September 11, that the district plans to transiton the upper elementary level students soon after.

We are thrilled to announce the beginning of our Anniversary Season Ten, as we continue re-inventing to accommodate ever-expanding needs as the pandemic grinds on.
For those Livingston residents receiving this week’s special townwide distribution of Livingston’s publication of record, the West Essex Tribune, our stalwart partner since the beginning of our journey, and others who may be less familiar with LPI’s work, our mission continues to be “providing for the homeless, profoundly poor, and disenfranchised.” This population is New Jersey’s poorest, living way below the poverty line.

This past week, Livingston began its new garbage collection contract, with Recycle Track Systems (RTS).

“Somewhat predictably, there were a few hiccups,” Township Manager Barry Lewis explained about the first week with the new garbage collector. Complaints from residents included different route times, missed pickups, and the change in price for rear-yard pickup.

Formerly, the township had used Waste Industries to collect garbage, but after the contract was set to expire at the end ofAugust, the township was legally obligated to put it back out to bid and take the lowest responsible offer, which was RTS. The contract with Waste Industries had already included two two-year extensions, the maximum permitted by law. So the township sought a three-year contract, with the option of two one-year extensions and specifications for rear-yard collection.

On Thursday, September 3, the Livingston Little League 12-yearolds successfully defended their District 8 title, completing a three year sweep as district champions. They won the title as ten-year-olds, 11-year-olds and in dramatic walkoff fashion as 12-year-olds.

Playing at the Meadowbrook Little League complex, Livingston battled with rivals, Nutley American, coming away with a 3-2 victory in the eighth inning.

Nate Vays held the Nutley offense in check for most of the game with strong defensive help from Adam Goldberg, Ridhit Beri, Mack Dockx, Ryan Zhu and the rest of the team. Along withNate, Sean Mullen, Adam Goldberg and Beau Belcuore pitched well, with Beau picking up the win. Nutley’s pitcher was equally up to the task, as scoring was at a premium until the late innings. The game was scoreless into the fifth inning, when Livingston broke it open by scoring two runs.

The Livingston First Aid Squad has opened its annual fundraising campaign, and has sent letters to the residents of Livingston.

The all-volunteer Squad is marking its 70th anniversary this year and, notes fund drive chairman Scott Maynard, “our mission statement of `neighbors helping neighbors’ has always been our philosophy.”

The year 2020 has been very challenging, both for residents and members of the First Aid Squad, Maynard says. “We are now dealing with an entirely newparameter of emergency medical care,” he explains. “All of our members have been specially trained to assist in all types ofmedical conditions, including COVID-19. It took some time to re-acclimate, and our members have helped greatly with our operations. We worked with RWJ Barnabas EMS Operations during the height ofthe pandemic and we continue to back each other up when needed. We are very appreciative of their assistance.”
