Last week, the Livingston Board of Education revealed its hybrid plan to return to school on a limited basis this fall amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Students who do not opt for the full remote learning option would spend roughly half their time at school and attend the other half of classes at home through remote learning.

This is a plan designed to appease everyone, but in practice, it leaves many involved disappointed at best, and worried for their safety at worst. Students and teachers will still risk exposure. Parents will still need to find child care for their children. The logistical and financial issues are boundless.

The Livingston Township Council, at its virtual meeting on Monday evening, August 3, passed a law concerning the 9/11 Memorial Garden, appointed a Blue Ribbon committee for redevelopment of the Livingston mall, discussed sidewalks, and approved a number of resolutions.

At the start of the meeting, recent Livingston High School graduate Andrew Depasquale was given a citation from the Council, commending him for being one of two Essex County students to win a Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship - one of two in Essex County to get the award.

Talks on the social justice committee being developed in town were expected to be finalized in closed session.

A 20-year-old man saved his neighbor, an eight-year-old girl, from a fox attack on Wednesday, according to the Livingston Police Department.

Officers were called to a Deal Lane home around 4:45 p.m. for a report of an animal bite, and arrived to find that an eight-year-old girl had been bitten several times by a fox.

The girl, Dylan Dratch, had been playing near the shed of a Springbrook Road home when the fox attacked her.

As ofTuesday afternoon, August 4, the Essex County health department has reported that a total of 518 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March. 69 of those residents have died as a result of the virus.

Compared to the same time last week, that is seven more cases, and one additional death.

Overall, statewide numbers continue to climb as individuals grow more lax in following social distancing guidelines. Last week, Governor Phil Murphy noted that many new cases have beentracedback to several large house parties.

Tropical Storm Isaias unleashed tornadoes, dangerously high winds, and heavy rain as it swept through the tri-state area on Tuesday, August 4, little reduced in power after making landfall at hurricane strength near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

The storm hit the North Carolina coast with winds of 85 miles per hour. More than 12 hours after coming ashore, Isaias still had sustained top winds of 65 to 70 miles per hour.

Its center passed over northern New Jersey, about 65 miles west of New York City, at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Helen L. Kessler of Verona, formerly of Livingston, died on July 19. She was 93 years old.

Mrs. Kessler, the daughter of Leo and Goldie Berman, was born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. She graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School and from secretarial school.

Predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Jack Kessler, and by her sister, Marian, Mrs. Kessler is survived by her children, Andrew (Jane), Marty (Barbara), and Ginny (Jeffrey); seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private funeral was held on Tuesday, July 21,

Scrap newspaper, magazines, and other paper for recycling should be placed at the curb for pickup in brown paper bags, tied with string, or in a returnable rigid container such as a plastic crate or box, but never in plastic bags.

Fred E. Widmann, recently of Livingston, died on Tuesday, July 28. He was 97 years old.

Born in Irvington, Mr. Widmann graduated from Hillside High School in 1939. He moved to Chatham Township in 1970 and, in 2013, to Care One Assisted Living in Livingston.

After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, Mr. Widmann worked for Western Electric and then for NJ Bell Telephone for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He was a long-time member of the Telephone Pioneers ofAmerica and active in the amateur radio community.

He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne, in 2017, and by his brother, Elmer, in 2009. He is survived by his six children: Wayne (Cheryl) of Jackson, Michigan; Tom of Bradenton, Florida; Nancy Duffy of Basking Ridge; Roy of Garfield, Arkansas; Carolyn Greendonner of Bradenton, Florida; and Heidi (Chris) of Summit; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

John Patrick Soley, 88, of Livingston, died at home on Sunday, August 2.

Born in Orange, Mr. Soley had resided in Livingston with his wife, Dorothy, for the past 60 years.

He worked for many years as a salesman for Cleveland Cotton Products (CCP) before his retirement.

Mr. Soley was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a coach for youth sports teams, including coaching basketball for Mount Saint Dominic’s Academy and various CYO (Christian Youth Organization) teams, and Livingston Little League, and Babe Ruth League baseball teams.

He was active in many civic organizations, including the Livingston Old Guard, St. Philomena’s Church, and the Our Lady of the Valley Alumni Association.
