Lancer Track Team Wins Medals, Break School Records at Essex Relays

The Livingston High School boys’ varsity track and field team was back on the track at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island on January 2 to compete against the fastest teams in Essex County. The Lancers came home with two medals and a new school record, and the Lancers, noted coach Nancy Petryna, “continued to show improvement in their speed, strength and endurance as they entered the championship portion of the season.”

Planning Bd. Continues Hearing Plans For Drive-Thru Starbucks, Pre-School

The Planning Board met on Tuesday evening and continued hearing an application by CP Management Group II LLC to build a drive-through Starbucks and a child care center on South Livingston Avenue.

Prior to opening testimony, the Board’s first order of business was to hold a brief re-organizational meeting. Both Peter Klein and Richard Dinar were unanimously approved to serve once again in the roles of chairman and vice chairman, respectively, for 2019.

A hearing for a minor subdivision at 1 Relkin Road was adjourned, and will be heard on February 5.

Irvington Man Fined for DWI

This past week in Livingston Municipal Court, an Irvington man was fined for drunk driving and a Livingston man was fined on amended charge of creating a disturbance.

DWI Charge

Angel Pardo, 23, of Irvington was stopped on November 14, 2018, in Livingston, and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI); driving without a license; reckless driving; using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle; having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle; driving without insurance; failure to exhibit a driver’s license; and failure to exhibit registration.

All but the first two charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, and the driving with no license charge was downgraded to a charge of driving with an expired license, which carries a lesser fine. For that charge, he was fined $156, plus $33 in court costs.

Shiva Held Jan. 1 and 2 For Stanley Rothstein

Stanley Rothstein of Livingston died December 27 at the age of 86. Shiva and minyan were held at the Pointe Gate Clubhouse, Livingston, on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 1 and 2.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Rothstein had lived in Livingston for the past 55 years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice; his three children, Lois Feld (Artie), Andy (Pam), and Steven (Shelly); and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family has suggested that donations in Mr. Rothstein’s memory be made to Temple Beth Shalom, 193 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, NJ 07039.

Stanley Wilson Rabinow

Stan” Rabinow passed away peacefully at the age of 100 years young, following a brief and difficult journey, on December 28, 2018 at the Teresian House in Albany, NewYork. He had been surrounded by family during the last years and months of his life.

Stan is survived by his son, Mark, and his wife, Nan; greatly beloved granddaughters, Sarah and Laura and her partner, David Bissember; and predeceased by his loving wife, Claire, of 71 years; and his son, John.

Stan and Claire resided for more than 62 years in Livingston prior to moving to the Albany area to be closer to family. For more than 30 years, Stan had been an active member of the Livingston Democratic Party, serving as a committee member, and was an early advocate and active member of the Livingston Recycling Committee.

Many Hands

This year’s township reorganization meeting, a roughly two-hour event held on New Year’s Day at the Senior/Community Center, saw the Council welcome three members back after winning reelection; bid a fond farewell to another who is soon moving from town; and install a new mayor and deputy mayor. Hundreds of volunteers were appointed or reappointed to various committees.

That a packed crowd filled the building to capacity on a morning when some in attendance were undoubtedly not feeling their best after a late night of New Year’s celebration is a shining example of what makes this township so special:

Engagement. Activism. Stewardship. Participation. Responsibility.

Funeral Services Held For Frances Levy, 89

Frances (née Yanoff) Levy, age 89, of Livingston, died at Saint Barnabas Medical Center on December 26.

Born in Long Branch and raised in Newark, Mrs. Levy was graduated from South Side High School. In 1950, she married Stanley Levy. The couple eventually settled in Livingston, where they resided for the rest of their lives.

She was an active member in the R.E.G.M. Cancer Research organization.

Mrs. Levy was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Stanley, and her sister, Molly Rovick. She is survived by her siblings, Edna Alexander and Jake Yanoff; her children, Cindee DeGennaro and her husband Victor, Robert Levy, Jill Amsterdam and her husband Chuck; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 30, at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston. Burial followed at Beth Israel Memorial Park in Woodbridge. The family has noted that memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Camuso elves have begun the arduous task of taking down the annual holiday display and putting it away until next year. Nearly 250 gingerbread men were sold this year to help defray the costs of the exhibit. Here, some of the "elves" are shown removing the gingerbread men and alphabetizing them to make collection easier. Below, the gingerbread men stand in formation, ready for pickup. They may be collected and taken home to their families now.

Philmon Mehari Returns to Track As Super Essex Conference Champion

The Livingston High School boys’ indoor track and field team competed in the Super Essex Conference Championship on Saturday, December 22, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

The Lancers faced a strong field of competitors from the teams of the large schools in theAmerican Division. LHS cross country stand-out Philmon Mehari returned to the track after a brief hiatus following his successful fall season.

“Seniors and newcomers alike seized their opportunities to shine in the first big meet of the season that began a holiday week for many Livingston students,” said coach Nancy Petryna.
