Celebrating Our Town’s History

This week, the Tribune presents its bi-annual “Celebrate Livingston’s History” section. It is one of our most popular sections (in fact, last year’s edition just won a first place New Jersey Press Association award!), in part because it speaks to our township’s sense of community; no matter who we are, we live here, together, in Livingston, and we all share that common thread. Livingston is a large town with a population of nearly 30,000, but we are regularly surprised to discover just how small it can feel. This history-focused section reflects that.

Cold Weather Prompts New Call for Coats

Article Image Alt Text

Prompted by a recent cold snap, Jeff “The Coat Guy” Friedman, founder and director of Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) has put out a renewed call for warm coats. “Although it’s been chilly, this winter has been relatively mild,” said Friedman, whose Livingston-based charity runs a seasonal coat drive. “Now, heading toward the end of February, the freezing weather is upon us. Nighttime temperatures this week are forecast to dip into the twenties and lower.”
With that in mind, he has made an additional appeal for warm coats and winter accessories, including gloves, hats and scarves. “The holiday season offers coat drives and myriad other ways in which generous folks can donate to those who are living below the poverty line, or are actually homeless and living out on the frozen streets,” said Friedman. “The season to be jolly is over, but the need is still present, and is both severe and glaring.”
