Superintendent Candidate Withdraws Due to Salary Cap

Article Image Alt Text

The Board’s lead candidate for the superintendent of schools position “has decided not to come to Livingston because that person would need to take about a $20,000 pay cut,” school board president BuddyAugust announced at the February 25 Board of Education meeting.

“That is the law,” he said.

“In fact, that dollar figure – actually a bit more than $20,000 – is just for the first year,” he told the Tribune. “It would jump to more than $100,000 in a five-year contract, which we were hoping to offer.”

A Healthy Heart

In recognition of American Heart Month this February, the Livingston Health Department has shared tips to lower one’s blood pressure. Consistent readings of numbers over 120/80 mmHG (“120 over 80”) are an indication of high or elevated blood pressure, which can lead damaged arteries, heart attack and stroke.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to lower your blood pressure. For example, we have personally found that avoiding long phone calls with in-laws, staying out of rush hour traffic, and not watching Knicks games are all good ways to maintain a healthy blood pressure.

Council of Five

Starting next week, Livingston’s Township Council returns to a five-member board, following the Livingston Democratic Committee’s selection of Michael Vieira to fill the spot left vacant by the resignation of former Councilman Michael Silverman.

We welcome Vieira to the position and wish him well. We would have been happy with any of the three candidates, however, after speaking with Vieira following his selection, we are confident he is well prepared for the role. He will bring relevant experience and knowledge, while also offering a fresh face to the Council for the first time in several years. He has made it clear he is entering the position with a head full of ideas, and is not afraid to speak his mind. If he sticks to that, it should prove beneficial for the township.
