A sixth grade student was rescued Tuesday evening after falling through the ice on Littell’s Pond.

Just after 5 p.m. on February 5, with the temperature at about 60 degrees, the 12-year-old boy went on the ice to retrieve a basketball and fell through.

Livingston Police officers and the Livingston Fire Department rushed to the scene, with officers David Cordero and Sean Whalen arriving first to find the boy in the pond.

The boy, who was able to stand with the water coming up to his chest, could not get out of the water on his own. The officers then went onto the ice and used a rope to pull the boy from the water within a matter of minutes.

Morethan 1,500 peopleparticipated in the 13th annual Cycle for Survival event at Equinox Fitness in Summit on Saturday, February 2.

Martha Ackermann of Livingston, currently a Memorial Sloan Ketttering Cancer Center (MSK) patient, helped kick off the day with an invited ride on “Jen’s Bike.” The specially designated spin bike honors Cycle for Survival co-founder, Jen Goodman Linn, who lost her cancer battle in 2011, at age 40.

Linn co-founded Cycle for Survival with her husband when she was challenged by her diagnosis of sarcoma. She was the sister of Brett Goodman (LHS class of 1986) and the daughter of Sandy and Len Goodman. The Livingston native was a member of the Livingston High School class of 1989 and an LHS Hall of Fame recipient.

Donations were still being counted when Sandy and Len Goodman announced the day’s tally: $1.1 million dollars.

A vote to decide Livingston’s next Council member will be held on Wednesday, February 13.

All three candidates, Scott Goldman, Laurie Kahn, and MichaelVieira, will address the Livingston Democratic Council for about 15 minutes prior to the vote. Their speaking time will be split between addressing the committee members and responding to questions, though the precise breakdown has not been officially determined.

Only the voting members and the three candidates will be present. The voting will be closed, meaning nobody will know how each member voted. The ballots will then be counted publicly.

Once a new Council member is chosen, he or she may be sworn in immediately, though that is not expected to happen. The results will likely be taken to the township clerk’s office, with a swearing in potentially set for the next regular meeting of the Council, which in this case would be on Monday, February 25.

A funeral service for Frances C. Anderson of Livingston will be held at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home today, January 31, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover.

Mrs. Anderson died on Monday, January 21. She was 90 years old. She was born in Newark and graduated from Irvington High School. She worked at the Prudential and Chubb Insurance companies.

Shewas predeceasedby herhusband, Henry E. Anderson, and a grandson. She is survived by her son, Richard Anderson (Kathryn) and daughter, Lynne F. Skaflen; her brother, Clayton James Davenport; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family suggests that donations in Mrs. Anderson’s name be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Livingston, or to the the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org).

On Saturday, January 26, the Livingston High School varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams raised money for the Duke Brain Aneurysm Fund in honor of player Aliza Gelman’s brother, Justin, who suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm last year while at Duke University. Thanks to the expertise of Duke’s Neurosurgery Department, Justin is fully recovered and has returned to school to continue his studies as a pre-med neuroscience major. In appreciation for the care he received, the Gelman family created the Duke Brain Aneurysm Fund, with the mission of “extending the reach of Duke’s life-giving care to patients across the globe by providing practitioners and caregivers beyond Duke with the advanced training and education necessary to ensure the best brain aneurysm care for everyone, everywhere.” Justin Gelman’s story was the topic of an article in the Tribune’s December 27, 2018 issue.

Harold “Jack” Klarman, 92, of Longwood, Florida, formerly of Livingston, passed away December 19, 2018.

Jack was born August 18, 1926 in the Bronx, graduated from Morris High School, and was an Army veteran who served in World War II. He moved with his wife, Jackie, and his daughters in 1956 to Livingston, where he lived until 1996, when he moved to Longwood.

Jack was the founder and owner of J. Klarman Electrical Contractors for 50 years, serving Livingston and surrounding towns before he retired in 1996.

He continued to visit Livingston every summer where he had many friends and family members. Jack enjoyed traveling, swimming, line dancing, and tai chi, but most of all he enjoyed being with family, friends and neighbors.

The Livingston High School swim team competed in the Super Essex Conference (SEC) Championships, held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Monday, January 21. The boys’team finished in fourth place, with the girls finishing in eighth place. Two Lady Lancers, Isabella Chen and Alessia DiBlasi, won first place medals in their events.

For the boys, Brandon Kim finished in third place in both the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle, and he was a part of the 200 meter medley relay and the 400 meter freestyle relay, which also finished in third place. Dylan Belluardo, who was also a part of those relays, finished in third place in the 100 meter butterfly. Also contributing in the relays were Aaron Teng; Ben Ma in the medley; and Andrew Li and Ken Lok in the 400 meter freestyle relay.

Over the past two months, there has been much discussion throughout town about a swastika that appeared on a student desk at Heritage Middle School.

The symbol was discovered in late November, and upon learning of it from a concerned community member and a parent, an article about the matter was published in the Tribune in late December. A single Letter to the Editor, written by Claudia and Brandon Minde in response to that article, followed a month later (though it was referred to as “another letter” when discussed at Monday’s Board of Education meeting). The letter noted the rise in bias-motivated incidents in northern New Jersey, and detailed the importance of students learning how to handle acts of bigotry that they may encounter later in life, by addressing it in school now.

Opinion

Monday night’s Township Council meeting was well-attended for several reasons, mostly due to the influx of first responders on hand to honor Livingston’s living legend, Charlie Schilling. Others, however, were there to find out who would be named our next Council member among Scott Goldman, Laurie Kahn, and Michael Vieira. Unfortunately, they left with no answers.

In a statement to the Tribune on Tuesday, the Council said they have chosen to send the decision back to the Livingston Democratic Committee, where 52 township residents will vote on the selection.
