Welcome Spring

Could it be? Ten days into “spring,” have we finally seen the last of the snow?

According to the state climatologist, this area of New Jersey typically sees an annual average of about 40 inches of snowfall. Well, we were blanketed with 55.4 inches this year, and it sure felt like more.

Man Charged in Burglaries, Caught By Snow Tracks

A 26-year-old Scotch Plains man is facing several burglary and trespassing charges after he was caught in part due to a trail of tracks he left in the snow leading up to more than half a dozen homes in Livingston last Friday morning.

At about 5:50 a.m. on Friday, March 23, a homeowner on Amelia Avenue looked out his back window to discover an individual trying to enter the home through the back door, police said.

Zoning Board Approves Residential Applications

There was little controversy at the Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting on March 27. The Board easily approved six residential applications, with only short discussions.

Stacey and Joseph Moore of 354 Beaufort Avenue came before the Board for a conditional variance to keep the existing home while constructing a second home in the back of the lot, 90 feet away.

Services Were Held For Annie Jamgotchian

Annie Jamgotchian, 68, of East Hanover died on Tuesday, March 20. The funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church in Livingston on Saturday, March 24. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Vartouhi Lambert and Yervant Terzian, Mrs. Jamgotrchian was a long-time resident of Livingston, where she worked as a beautician for almost 40 years. She was the wife of Harout Jamgotchian; the mother of Raffi (Aline) Jamgotchian, Michael (Kristin) Jamgotchian, and Taleen Jamgotchian; and the grandmother of six. She is also survived by her sister, Siroun (Norman) Meguerditchian and Jack (Heather) Terzian.

Adele Altman Dies on March 22

A funeral service was held on March 25 for Adele Altman of Livingston, who died on Thursday, March 22. She was 89 years old. Mrs. Altman was born in Newark to Samuel and Anna Schram. She was predeceased by her husband, Morris Altman, and her son, Ilan Altman. She is survived by her daughter, Alisa Weissman and her husband Eric, and two grandchildren. Carl G. Weisenfeld

Carl G. Weisenfeld passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Inglemoor Rehabilitation and Care Center in Livingston. He was 84. Born and raised in Passaic, he lived in Livingston for over 48 years. Carl was one of New Jersey’s leading practitioners in the field of real property tax appeals and had successfully been involved with numerous landmark decisions in his area of law, including Feder v. City of Passaic, where the taxpayer’s right to relief from discriminatory assessments were established. He was a cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and received an L.L.B. degree from Columbia University Law School and an L.L.M. taxation degree from New York University School of Law. He was a member of the Essex County, New Jersey State and American Bar Associations. Carl practiced law for over 50 years. He was a managing partner at Hannoch-Weisman in Roseland and later was a partner with Norris McLaughlin & Marcus in Bridgewater.

Amanda Pearsall

Former Livingston resident Amanda Pearsall, 86, passed away peacefully on March 19 in Charlotte, Michigan. An Upsala College graduate, she moved to Livingston in 1963 and founded Strawberry Hill Nursery School with Wendy Klauber in 1974. Amanda was a longtime member and senior warden of St. Peter’s Church. She moved to Charlotte in 1988 where she was assistant director of the Charlotte Community Library. Amanda is survived by her sister, Dawn Vander Ploeg (Randy), her brother, Wilson Cheney (Joni); her children, Randy Pearsall (Josanne), Stuart Pearsall, Heather McGrath (Bill), Becky Scott (Brad), Kari Wright (Todd); and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charlotte (MI) Community Library or Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation (NJ) for Long Term Care in memory of her granddaughter, Taylor Pearsall. Reginald Tauben

Reginald Samuel Tauben died March 19, 2018 at the age of 94 in West Caldwell, New Jersey. He was a resident of Livingston from 1958 to 2012. Reg was predeceased by his wife, Carol, after 66 years of a loving marriage. He considered Carol to be his “raison d’etre.” He is survived by their daughter, Rolayn, in Berkeley, California, and their son, David, in Seattle, Washington, and their grandchildren, Alex, Chantal, Daniel, and Julia. Reg was a combat veteran of U.S. Anti-Aircraft, 12th Army Group, serving in Europe during WW II, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Ardennes, as the generals’ interpreter aligned with the French Resistance. After discharge, he returned to college and later added an MBA from CUNY. He retired in 1989 from Fieldcrest-Cannon as Manager of Marketing Research. He had previously worked in a similar capacity at Prudential Insurance, Rayco, RJ Reynolds Food, American Chicle, Warner Lambert, and Bristol Myers Squibb.

Sylvia Pauline Ivkovich

Sylvia Pauline Ivkovich (née Bonvini), who lived nearly her entire life in Livingston, passed away in Saint Barnabas Medical Center on Monday, March 19. She was 81 years old. Sylvia was born in Orange in 1936, and moved to Livingston in the early 1940s. She was a 1954 graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell. After graduating from high school, she worked at Bonvini’s, her family’s pizzeria in Livingston, until the mid 1980s. After she left the restaurant business, she was employed at her husband’s company, Cooperative Inventory Service. She retired in the early 2000s. Sylvia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and had recently become a greatgrandmother. Always quick with her witty sense of humor, she was happy to share family recipes with friends and neighbors, and opened her home over the years to her children’s friends and neighbors with many pasta and pizza requests.

Funeral Mass Offered For Dr. Alfred Helwig

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills on Saturday, March 24, for Dr. Alfred William Helwig II, 66, who died on March 20. Born in Orange, Dr. Helwig lived in Livingston for much of his early life. He attended Saint Benedict’s Prep High School and Georgetown University. Valedictorian of his class at the University of the Philippines (Manila) College of Medicine, he practiced gastroenterology and internal medicine in Millburn for over 30 years. Dr. Helwig is survived by his mother, Anna Helwig (neé McKinley); his wife, Penny Helwig (neéVolpe); his children, Jonathan (Kaitlyn) and Chase; and his brothers, Gregory, Noel, Robert, and Kyle.
