A BLAZING TRUCK FIRE was extinguished by volunteers of the Livingston Fire Department on Wednesday afternoon, October 11. A driver for Evergreen Recycling had parked his truck about 45 feet from one of the buildings at ParkVue at Livingston, 211 Eisenhower Parkway, and was having lunch when he smelled smoke. He exited the vehicle and found smoke under the engine, which soon was blazing. A general alarm was sounded and volunteers responded to the scene. Contents of the recycling truck were exploding and the heat of the fire caused a front tire to burst.

COLOR GUARD WINS FIRST PLACE: Livingston High School recently competed in Group 3A at the Hanover Park “Horns at the Hive” marching band competition on Saturday, October 14, and took first place with best color guard for its class. Its show, entitled “A Little Night Music,” included Night on Bald Mountain, Moondance, Clair de Lune, and Some Nights.

VFW VISITS LHS: Members of the Livingston VFW post visited Livingston High School to recognize student Zoe Packel and teacher Ernie Cuneo for their contributions to the community. Packel was noted for her “stirring” speech at the annual September 11 ceremony at the oval.

About 150 people attended the Livingston Public Schools’ first parent forum about a proposed random student drug testing policy at Livingston High School. The forum was held on Wednesday, October 11, and was videotaped for showing on LTV.

“Tonight is about information about what random drug testing is,” said superintendent of schools Christina Steffner. “It’s the first step in a yearlong exploration.”

Livingston Township will begin its 2017 Leaf Collection Program in late October.

“Our Public Works employees do a great job on leaf collection every year,” said Department of Public Works (DPW) superintendent Mike Anello. “Every year, we publish our Leaf Collection Program Schedule, along with a reminder to our residents of the rules and guidelines for the program.”

Editor’s Note: Jeff Friedman, known affectionately as “The Coat Guy,” is founder and director of the Livingston Philanthropies which, among other endeavors, runs the annual Livingston Coat Drive. Livingston Philanthropies also collects toiletries for the homeless, as well as cosmetics and men’s dresswear. His charitable organization was recently the recipient of a donation of 200 new pairs of shoes, a “surprise donation” that he calls his “biggest ever.” Here, Friedman recounts the donation by two brothers from Livingston who read about his organization in the Tribune and wanted to help.

PHILANTHROPIES PARTNER TOUCHED MANY LIVES: This week, Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the Livingston Philanthropies, reported the death of Barbara Maran, “a true humanitarian and dear friend of mine and Livingston Philanthropies.” He noted, “Since 2001, Barbara was the director of the soup kitchen, pantry and the Feed the Hungry program at St. John’s Parish in Newark. St. John’s is another founding distribution partner associated with the Philanthropies.”

Formerly known simply as “Madonna Field,” the new multi-sport turf field on Madonna Drive received its official name, “Saint Barnabas Medical Center Community Field,” at a ceremony held on Monday, October 9, at 4 p.m. Officials from the Township of Livingston joined Saint Barnabas Medical Center staff to celebrate the new education pavilion at the field. The field is used by Livingston recreation and high school athletes of all ages, spanning sports from football and soccer, to lacrosse and cricket. Saint Barnabas Medical Center donated $1.3 million toward funding the project.

A flagship facility of RWJBarnabas Health, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, noted Barry Ostrowsky, president and CEO, RWJBarnabas Health, “is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the youth in its community. The new Saint Barnabas Medical Center Community Field is a catalyst to expanding youth athletics in Livingston.”

BOB LEOPOLD HONORED: Bob Leopold, seated, was honored by both the Township Council and the Planning Board at the Council’s meeting on Monday, October 9. A long-time volunteer on several township committees and boards, he recently resigned from the Planning Board after more than two decades of service.
