Electronics Recycling/ Paper Shredding Event This Saturday at Senior/Community Center

The Township of Livingston will hold its final Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event of 2017 on Saturday, October 7. The program offers residents drive-through service to dispose of unwanted electronics and small appliances – whether the items are working or not – and of confidential papers that need shredding.

Livingston residents are invited to take their electronics and confidential papers to the rear and side parking lots of the Senior/Community Center at 204 Hillside Avenue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 7. Volunteers will be on site to guide residents to the correct location, depending upon the types of items to be recycled. Residents are reminded to drive slowly and attentively through the parking lot.

Road Work Continues

ROAD WORK CONTINUES: Shown above, paving continued this week on South Livingston Avenue, north of ShopRite, as part of the Essex County 2017 Roadway Resurfacing Program. The paving should be completed by Thursday night, October 5, said Essex County engineer Rasheed Yusuf. As the Tribune went to press on Wednesday, workers were striping the lines with chalk, a task that should be completed within two or three days.

Force Homestead Will Be Open Sunday

The Force Homestead Museum, located at 366 South Livingston Avenue, will be open to the public on Sunday, October 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Originally built in 1745 as a oneroom house with a loft by Theophilus Ward, the architecture of this historic house refl ects the daily lives of the early settlers. In 1777 Samuel Force purchased the farm. He gave it to his son, Thomas Force, who served in the Revolutionary War and settled in the house with his wife, Hannah Smith, after the war. Thomas and Hannah were the parents of ten children, and over the years, added a larger section to the one-room house.

LPD Urges Residents: LOCK YOUR CAR!

On behalf of the Livingston Police Department, LPD spokesman Det. Sgt. Jack Hickey once again urged Livingston residents to be vigilant when it comes to locking their vehicles, even when parked in their own driveways.

He reported that this week, eight unlocked vehicles were illegally entered. Vehicles were entered Sykes Avenue on Tuesday, September 26; Canterbury Road, Camelot Drive, Goodhart Drive and West McClellan Avenue on Friday, September 29; and at East Cedar Street Commons on Sunday, October 1.

Veteran Planning Board Member Retires; Spectrum 360 Presents Plans for Addition

The Planning Board met on Tuesday evening for its regular monthly meeting. Chairman Peter Klein announced to the Board that veteran member, Robert Leopold, has resigned, effective September 29.

The members of the Board adopted a resolution commending Leopold for his tireless commitment, having served on the Board as a member of the Township Council, which appointed him on January 1, 1982. He then returned to the Board in 1994 for 24 consecutive years of service.

Seasonal Coat Drive Now Underway; Livingston Philanthropies Volunteers Distribute Hundreds of Toiletries Gift Bags

The Livingston Philanthropies’ seasonal Coat Drive is underway, with coats currently being collected, along with the ongoing collections of toiletries, new cosmetics, diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6, women’s sanitary products, men’s dress attire, and more. Philanthropies volunteers worked with three key distribution partners in Newark this past week – the Willing Heart Community Center; St. John’s Soup Kitchen, Pantry and Women’s Center; and Integrity House, a well-known and respected addiction treatment and recovery center.
Volunteers turned-out many hundreds of toiletries and cosmetics gift bags over a recent, several day period. “Our house smells like a spa,” jokes Philanthropies founder Jeff “the Coat Guy” Friedman.

Lomax Retires After 26 Years With SYLS

Kenneth Lomax, athletics and aquatics supervisor for the Livingston Senior, Youth, and Leisure Services (SYLS) Department (formerly the Livingston Department of Recreation and Parks), has stepped down after a total of 26 years of employment with the department, and 16 years as supervisor.

Lomax’ career with the Recreation Department actually extends back to the early 1960s, when he volunteered for the Recreation Department as a teenager. He moved to Livingston at the age of eight, and was graduated from Livingston High School.

Firefighters Extinguish Brush Fire; Assist Millburn FD at House Fire

During the past week, Livingston’s volunteer firefighters extinguished a brush fire, responded to reports of an oven fire and smoke and burning odors; and went to Millburn on a mutual aid call.

Fire Department volunteers went to 280 Eisenhower Parkway on Wednesday, September 20, after a brush fire was reported there. They found a small area of brush burning behind the Sprint store, having possibly been inadvertently ignited by a contractor working in the area. The fire was extinguished without incident.

Board of Education to Allow Remote Participation

The Livingston Board of Education made history on September 25, when it approved two new policies that could significantly change the way the Board operates.

With a dissenting vote by school board member Sam Messer, the Board of Education adopted Policy 0164, which permits remote attendance at board meetings through the use of electronic devices.
