Seth Cohen and Samantha Messer Installed:

Seth Cohen and Samantha Messer were sworn in at the Board of Education’s reorganization meeting on Tuesday, January 7. Messer was installed for a second term, and Cohen for his first term.

At the meeting, the district provided officially certified results of the November 5 election: Messer received 2,369 votes; Cohen 2,206; Sasha Pailet Koff, 1,854; and Alyse Berger Heilpern, 1,837.

Abigail Rose Gaston, born Thursday, January 2, to Inna and Shawn Gaston of 25 Scarsdale Drive, is the winner of the West Essex Tribune’s 62nd annual First Baby Contest.

Abigail Rose was born at 7:03 p.m. on January 2 at Morristown Medical Center. She weighed eight pounds, seven ounces at birth, and is the Gastons’ third child. She joins two brothers, Ryan, age 3½, and Jasper, age 16 months.

At the Township Council’s organizational meeting on New Year’s Day, Livingston’s residents, employees and elected officials gathered at the Senior/Community Center. Hundreds were appointed to dozens of township committees; Rudy Fernandez was sworn in as the year’s mayor; and Shawn Klein as deputy mayor. The two replaced Al Anthony, and Fernandez as 2019’s mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

It was a genial two hour affair, with an air of familiarity and goodwill that started off 2020 on the right foot for those in attendance. As the Council members said in their speeches, Livingston appears to be set up well for the future. They detailed the accomplishments of 2019, while sharing the goals and plans for 2020.

Donato Casiero, 93, of Whippany, formerly of Livingston and Orange, died on January 4 at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Predeceased by his wife, Giuseppina, Mr. Casiero is survived by his sons,Anthony, Vincent (Angela), and Daniel Casiero, Jr. (Angela); and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Casiero was born in Alberona, Italy and immigrated to the US in 1957. He was the founder and president of All State Landscaping, Inc. which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1998.

He served as a Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Orange, where he co-founded the Maria Santissima dell’Incoronata Feast; a founding member of theAlberonese Social Club, which recognized him as the 1975 Alberonese Man of the Year; and a founding member and past president of the UnitedAssociation of Gardeners, a cooperative organization of landscapers in Essex and Morris counties.

The funeral was held Wednesday, January 8, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

Frieda Greenstein, née Hornstein, 95, died on November 23. Born in Newark, she lived in Livingston, then in Lauderhill, Florida, for 20 years, before moving to Whippany.

Mrs. Greenstein was a patient relations director at Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, for 35 years.

Predeceased by her husbands, Sanford Sweigman and Dave Greenstein, and her son, Steven Sweigman, she is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Michael) Sakowitz of Wayne; a sister, Helene Siegel of Monroe Township; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Services were held November 26 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest New Jersey.

The sessions will be on Thursday mornings, from 11 a.m. to noon on January 2, 16, and 30, and February 6 and 20.

Barbara Ann Mather died on December 20 in the Green Hill nursing home in West Orange after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83 years old.

Miss Mather grew up on West Cedar Street in Livingston and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1954.

She worked as a broker in New York City and then for Robert Martin and the Martin Family Fund in Saddle River.

She also served as president of the Board of PAWS, the Pound Animal Welfare Society of Montclair.

Miss Mather is survived by cousins and friends, who held a memorial gathering at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home in Montclair on December 30. She was interred at Crest Haven Memorial Park in Clifton.

The family has announced that donations in Miss Mather’s memory may be sent to PAWS, P.O. Box 149, Montclair, NJ 07042. Online condolences may be left at www.moriartyfh.com.

The West Essex Tribune is celebrating more than six decades of showering the first baby of the new year with an assortment of gifts generously donated by our advertisers. The first baby of 2020 born to Livingston parents will be named the winner of the Tribune’s 62nd annual First Baby Contest.

The rules to determine the winner are the same each year: The first baby of 2020 must be born in a nearby hospital to parents who currently reside in Livingston. The exact time of the birth must be certified in writing by the attending physician.

Entries must be received in the West Essex Tribune office by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8. The winner will be announced in the January 9 edition of the newspaper.

New Mini-Survey: Emergencies and Alerts

The Livingston Vision 20/20 Committee is continuing its series of short, topic-focused community surveys with its “Emergencies and Alerts” mini-survey, open throughout January.

This survey takes just one to two minutes to complete and is available online and in hard copy. It asks a few multiple-choice and checkbox questions about use of Livingston’s Swift911 Emergency Notification System, for individuals who have signed up, as well as for those who haven’t.
