Lock Your Cars!

We know you have heard this before, likely many times, but last week there was a string of car burglaries in town. This included several vehicles stolen right out of residential driveways.

The week we were referring to, by the way, was August 3 through 9. But if you named just about any other week, you would likely have guessed correctly anyway. That is how bad the situation has become in recent years.

Election Coverage

Beginning next month, as it does each year for local contested races, the West Essex Tribune’s coverage will ramp up for the upcoming Board of Education election. This year’s format will feature slight changes that reflect the recent shift toward voting by mail (and, as a result, people voting early).

Every fall in which Livingston has a contested Board of Education or Township Council election, the Tribune provides the candidates the opportunity to share their thoughts in the paper, through a series of questions leading up to the November election. These questions are created with the help of the Livingston League of Women Voters and designed to help our readers get an idea of each candidate’s viewpoints, so that an educated choice can be made when voting. They offer opportunities for readers to directly compare the candidates on a handful of important topics.

LPI Receives Largest Donation Ever

Article Image Alt Text

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), through its New Jersey Homeless initiative, has just received its largest donation ever, announced Jeff Friedman, the charity’s founder and director. “The process leading to this funding commenced about a month ago, quite by surprise, and is permeated with Livingston’s philanthropic stamp,” he said.
Friedman recounted, “I fielded a phone call from Livingston resident Charles Maltzman, who is the director at Willow Lake Day Camp in Lake Hopatcong. He shared that Willow Lake, each year, does a fundraiser for a diversity of charitable organizations. He had read about LPI’s initiative of ‘providing for the homeless, profoundly poor and disenfranchised’ in the West Essex Tribune – LPI’s stalwart partner since our humble beginnings in 2011 as a coat drive. Maltzman then approached me about dedicating this season’s 2021 family fundraising campaign to benefit LPI’s “New Jersey Homeless” initiative this season.

The garden, originally created in 2004-06 by members of the school’s Garden Club and Student Council, consists primarily of lawn, bushes and a few trees, with a brick path that had become overgrown. Gu removed the grass from the path, and planted flower beds and wisteria for the arbor. The Silver Award is the second highest award available in Girl Scouting.
