Residents throughout town have been placing various lawn signs, expressing gratitude to the local health care professionals and essential workers who are on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19.

The Livingston Township Council held a special meeting at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 1, to discuss an extension to the grace period of the second quarter property taxes. As many as 70 people watched the meeting live, with more than 1,400 online viewers by Monday morning.

The property tax deadline is May 1, but on Tuesday, April 28, governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order allowing municipalities to extend the grace period to June 1. Previously, the grace period before interest started to accrue was ten days, making it May 11.

Earlier in the week, the Council had lowered the interest rate to six percent for overdue taxes greater than $1,500.

A cook-top fire that homeowners had thought was extinguished instead spread stealthily into the range’s exhaust system, necessitating Fire Department involvement.

On Saturday, May 2, at approximately 1:45 p.m., firefighters received a report of a kitchen fire at 57 North Baums Court. Upon arrival, they found that all occupants had exited the home, and there was a heavy smoke condition.

Fire officials learned that there had been a fire, which the homeowner had extinguished with a portable fire extinguisher, involving a pan of oil on the stove cook top. The fire, however, had extended up into the range’s exhaust hood/vent. Firefighters witnessed flames in the exhaust vent above the ceiling and coming out of the vent at the rear of the house.

Milesplit, a national data base of track and field performances and events decided to host a virtual track meet by encouraging track and field athletes from all over the United States to submit videos of their individual performances as a way to continue to compete. Inspired by this, the coaches at Livingston High School decided to do the same locally. The athletes submitted their performances through an app on their phones through another track and field data base. “Another surprise that came from the experience was that other athletes from the United States also looking for competition entered the Livingston meet!” said coach Nancy Petryna.

On Monday, governor Phil Murphy announced that all New Jersey school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the school year in the ongoing effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. His decision about school-sponsored summer programs and extended school year services for students with disabilities will be forthcoming.

The decision was not unexpected, following New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s school closure decision last Friday. New Jersey now joins more than 45 states and Washington, D.C. that have announced school closures through at least June.

Organizations including the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey School Boards Association, and administrators’ groups, had urged Murphy to keep school buildings closed.

Amalia “Mali” Young died April 28, at the age of 95, of COVID-19.

Mrs. Young was born in Irvington and graduated from Irvington High School and was employed as a secretary during World War II. She married Stanley C. Young of Oklahoma City in 1948. After moving to Oklahoma, Mrs. Young worked at Tinker Air Force Base. Soon afterwards, the family moved to New Jersey, living in Irvington and Westfield before settling down in Livingston in 1957.

Surviving Mrs. Young are her three children: Ralph and his wife, Suzanne, of Maryland; Randi of Randolph, and Amy and her husband, William DiBartolo, of East Hanover; six grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and her two brothers, Wallace and Robert VanNess.

Amalia spent her last years at Inglemoor Care Center in Livingston, near her home of 50 years.

Murray Saul Dobro, a resident of Livingston for many years before moving to Crane's Mill in West Caldwell, died of COVID-19 on April 26.

He was born on May 6, 1928, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Samuel and Sarah Bornstein Dobro and grew up in Dorchester. Mr. Dobro (Mashe) received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Northeastern University and served in the Korean War as a chemist.

Although he grew up in a kosher home, Mr. Dobro developed the modern method for curing ham. He worked for decades in meat manufacturing before starting JCS Sales, a food brokerage business that he ran for over 40 years.

In 1953 he married Barbara Diane Edinger, and together they raised Jeffrey, Carrie and Stuart Dobro.

Murray was preceded in death by his brother, Danny, and is survived by his wife, Barbara; his three children, Jeff (Candace), Carrie (Mark) and Stuart; and two granddaughters.

Former longtime Livingston resident Elaine Abeles died on Monday, April 27, at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. She was born in Newark and graduated from Weequahic High School in 1942. Mrs. Abeles moved to Florida in

Mrs. Abeles moved to Florida in 1991 and to Brick in 2015.

Predeceased by her husband, Donald, who died in 1979, Mrs. Abeles is survived by her daughter, Randy Abeles; her sons, Gary Abeles (Charna) and Richard Abeles (Anja); four grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. A private burial was held.
