Board of Ed. Approves District Calendar for 2018-2019

The School Board approved a calendar for the 2018-19 academic year, and agreed to a change in this year’s calendar, during its August 16 meeting.

New in this year’s calendar is a delayed opening on Thursday, December 14. The district considers the delayed opening a pilot project in delivering professional development, without the children losing a day of school.

Search Will Continue For New Township Manager

The Township Council, said mayor Shawn Klein, is “still working out details” concerning the search for a new township manager following the sudden resignation of newly hired township manager, Gregory Bonin.

Bonin’s appointment was confi rmed by the Township Council on July 11, and he officially began his employment as township manager on Monday, August 7. He resigned from the position just one week later, on Monday, August 14.

Livingston Philanthropies Seeks Volunteers As Donations Continue Throughout Summer

Although he is on hiatus for the summer, Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the Livingston Coat Drive and Livingston Philanthropies, reports that donations are continuing to come in. “Ever-generous Livingston residents continue to visit Livingston Philanthropies partner, the West Essex Tribune, with coats, small-size toiletries, diapers, feminine hygiene pads, men’s suits and more,” he explains. “And our highly successful ‘Personal Shopping for the Homeless’ initiative has not been forgotten during warm months. With summer sales going on, the Tribune continues to receive a steady flow of new socks, underwear, shirts, coats and winter accessories.” The Tribune, located at 495 South Livingston Avenue next to the Livingston ShopRite, has been, and continues to be, a drop-off point for Livingston Philanthropies coat and toiletries collections. “Remember,” adds Friedman, “If you see something, buy something.”

Livingston Honors India's Independence

LIVINGSTON HONORS INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE: On Tuesday, August 15, Livingston Township held a flag-raising ceremony at the Oval to celebrate India’s 70th year of independence. The audience, including many children, stood at attention as (below) mayor Shawn Klein, Council member Al Anthony and freeholder Pat Sebold, with 12 year old Raina Batra, raised the flag of India; Raina had successfully asked the Township Council to approve the Independence celebration.

Livingston Firefighters Extinguish Car Fires

The Livingston Fire Department extinguished two car fires and reported to a small fire at a convenience store this past week. Other than those three calls, however, it was a quiet week; among the reports received, 14 were unfounded alarms and two were the result of outdoor burning.

A small fire in a rear bathroom of the Livingston Mart at 212 North Livingston Avenue was extinguished by the store owner. Firefighters responded to the scene on August 11 and insured that the fire, which had erupted in a ventilation motor, was out before venting smoke from the store.

New Town Manager Resigns After One Month

New Livingston Township manager Gregory Bonin has resigned from his post after just one month on the job.

Bonin announced his resignation effective immediately at the Livingston Township Council’s conference meeting on Monday.

He had been hired by the Council on July 11.

Township Council Discusses Pools, Madonna Field Signage at Conference

At its conference meeting on Monday evening, the Livingston Township Council discussed the Livingston community pools and signage at the new Madonna Drive sports field.

Mayor Shawn Klein noted that he and other Township Council members had begun formulating questions for the Pool Committee. The committee, comprising 11 members – four township employees and seven residents – is currently gathering information for the Council, so a decision can be made regarding the future of the Northland and Haines pools, both of which require extensive renovation.

Fire Department Assists at East Hanover Train Fire

The Livingston Fire Department this week helped battle a train fire in East Hanover, and answered calls about gas leaks, a blown transformer, and trees hitting electrical wires.

The LFD received a request for mutual aid from the East Hanover Fire Department in extinguishing a train fire on Melanie Lane in that community’s industrial zone on Thursday, August 3, at 11 p.m. Livingston sent an engine company, which worked at the scene. The fire was extinguished with no injuries reported.
