Melissa Lippman To Wed Mark Gold

Beth and Paul Lippman of 6 Knollwood Drive have announced the engagement of their daughter, Melissa, to Brad Gold of New York City. The future bridegroom is the son Audrey and Mark Gold of Manalapan.

Miss Lippman is a 1999 graduate of Livingston High School and a 2003 graduate of the University of Arizona. She is a sales representative for Max Consulting.

Her fiance is a graduate of Manalapan High School and the University of Florida. He is employed at JP Morgan.

The couple plans a November wedding at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston.

Child Left in Car; Mother is Charged

While investigating a case of shoplifting at the Livington Mall on Tuesday, August 8, at approximately 2:15 p.m., a Livingston police officer came upon a vehicle that was left running in the parking lot of the shopping center. Upon investigation, the officer noticed that a child was sleeping inside the vehicle.

According to officials, it took about 30 minutes for LPD officers to gain entry into the vehicle. In the meantime, multiple attempts were made to track down the owner of the vehicle, including calling the woman’s name over the mall’s PA system and finally obtaining her phone number.

Vote Delayed for Second Time on Hobart Gap Zoning Change

At its meeting on Monday, August 7, the Township Council, once again, delayed a vote on an ordinance to rezone four split-zoned lots on West Hobart Gap Road, where each lot straddles the R-1 and R-2 residential districts. An ordinance to rezone a split-zoned lot in the area of Cedar Mall Plaza was approved. In addition, the Council heard complaints from Schindler Way residents about noise and safety issues on their street.

Hearing Delayed

The Council delayed, for a second time, a final vote on an ordinance that would rezone split-zoned lots on West Hobart Gap Road. The previous hearing was held on Monday, July 10, during which two residents came before the Council to oppose the change.

National Night Out

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT: Hundreds of people showed up for a night of activities at Livingston’s annual National Night Out celebration at the Oval on Tuesday evening. The festivities are held nationwide on the first Tuesday in August. They are meant to increase awareness about police anti-crime programs, and give local law enforcement officers an opportunity to interact with the community. National Night Out included free food, a helicopter landing, K9 Unit demonstrations, rides, games, a DJ, face-painting and more.

Livingston Teen Explores Costa Rica with Outward Bound

After graduating from Livingston High School in June, Macen Lantzman completed a 15-day journey through the rainforests of Costa Rica with Outward Bound Costa Rica, a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1992.

“I had done an Outward Bound program in Colorado three summers ago,” Macen said, “and I knew I wanted to do another one.” Outward Bound provides challenging, learning expeditions.

Library Features Paintings by Livingston Artist

The month of August will see a vibrant display of artwork by Livingston artist Srija Chartham in the Livingston Public Library’s display case, announced Archana Chiplunkar, who coordinates the monthly displays.

With no formal training in art, Chiplunkar noted, “Chartham’s art compositions vibrate with tremendous color and energy.”

LPD and County Law Enforcement Respond to Newark Academy Threat

A phoned-in bomb threat brought Livingston police officers, as well as county and federal law enforcement teams, to Newark Academy on Tuesday, August 1. According to police officials, at approximately 10 a.m., an individual described as a young male called the school from an outside phone line, and stated that a bomb was in the building.

Approximately 700 students and camp participants were evacuated from the building and escorted by staff members to a neighboring property, as per protocol. Classes, camps and other activities were all cancelled for the day as of 10:30 a.m.

Mayor Sets Record Straight On Plans for Pool Facilities

Amid rumors he has heard in the township, Livingston mayor Shawn Klein has confirmed to the Tribune that there are no current plans to close Northland Pool.

In recent months, the Township Council has discussed the future of the community pools, both Haines and Northland. In April, the Council heard a report by representatives of LAN Associates. The company was hired to provide professional engineering services for the development of a facilities inventory report and a ten year master plan for the pool facilities. The assessment revealed infrastructure issues at both pools. The representatives noted that both need a major investment of capital to remain up to standard and operational in the future.

New Initiatives Proposed to School Board Include Random Drug Testing at LHS

Livingston public schools superintendent Christine Steffner asked the Board of Education, at its Wednesday, July 19, meeting, to give its approval for the district to explore three new initiatives.

Two are scheduling changes, one regarding high school graduation and the other for professional development. The third idea the district wants to explore is random drug testing to help stem student drug abuse.

Tree Takes Down Utility Poles and Primary Wires

During the course of a rather quiet week, Livingston’s volunteer firefighters spent one busy Sunday dealing with a downed tree and a trapped dog.

A large tree came down on Crescent Road at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 23. The tree snapped two utility poles and took down primary electrical wires on Crescent and nearby parts of West Northfield Road. Repairs and clean-up took most of the day, and power was not restored until late on Sunday night.
