To celebrate 50 years at 321 South Livingston Avenue, the West Essex YMCA will host a free community event for members and area residents on Saturday, October 19, from 3 to 7:30 p.m. on the grounds of the YMCA.

“We have planned an afternoon of fun and celebrating with the goal of bringing together our members and the wider community to celebrate this milestone and our deep partnerships with the townships of West Orange, Caldwell, Roseland and Livingston,” said Helen Flores, executive director of the YMCA.

Events will include two live musical performances on the lawn of the YMCA and a light buffet supper.

Silvia Seligman, 98, of West Orange and formerly of Livingston, passed away October 10. Graveside services were held Sunday, October 13, at the King Solomon Cemetery on Dwasline Road in Clifton. Shiva will be observed at the Gotfried residence, 4 Knights Court, Randolph, NJ.

Mrs. Seligman was predeceased by her loving husband, Edward in 2003, and also by her brother, Irving, and her sister, Tillie.

She was an avid crocheter, enjoyed cooking, current events, and old movies.

She is survived by her daughters Rita (Lawrence) Gotfried of Randolph; Elaine (Peter) Shaw of San Diego, California; and Susan (Allan) Levine of West Orange. Also surviving are grandchildren Jennifer (Yehoshua) Racz, Jeremy Shaw, Gwenn Levine, Jeffrey (Chrissy) Levine, Jessica (Aaron) Wolff, and Allison Gotfried, as well as great-grandchildren Ryan, Emma, Benjamin, Julia, William, and Miriam.

The Livingston Police Department has joined with Regal Bank and Saint Barnabas Medical Center/RWJ Barnabas Health in a fundraising campaign for breast cancer awareness.

In addition to sporting pink police patches during the month of October, the LPD is selling special t-shirts, with the proceeds going to breast cancer awareness.

The t-shirts are available at the LPD Records Room, located on the second floor of Police Headquarters, 333 South Livingston Avenue, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shirts may be purchased by check or money order (no cash or credit) made payable to “Saint Barnabas Development Foundation” with the notation “Breast Center” in the memo section. The Livingston High School girls’ varsity tennis team advanced to the North I, Group IV Sectional Tournament final with a 5-0 victory over Morristown at the Memorial Park tennis courts in the Sectional semi-final on Thursday, October 10. Ridgewood defeated Bergen Tech in the other semi-final.

Livingston 5, Morristown 0: Valencia Xu defeated Grace Starcher, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles in a dominant performance. At second singles, Morristown’s Maddie Siegel was leading Emma Conforti, 7-6 (9-7), 4-2, but had to “retire” due to leg cramps. Brielle Schwartz overpowered Morristown’s Eliana Milich at third singles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Livingston Board of Education approved a resolution Monday night to address vaping concerns for children and teenagers.The resolution notes the existence of 530 confirmed and probable cases of lung illness associated with the use of e-cigarettes and vaping products, and that 20 percent of high school students in New Jersey use vaping products.

The draft resolution called for the NJ Legislature and Governor Philip Murphy to impose an immediate temporary statewide ban on the sale of all vaping and e-cigarette products [regardless of the purchaser’s age].

This draft had been circulated among the Board members. Sasha Pailet Koff, chairman of the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee (LMAC), said that an informal poll showed thattheLMACmembers were “overwhelmingly in support” of the resolution “as currently drafted.”

Livingston Chief of Police Gary Marshuetz wants to remind residents of the state’s idling laws.Those in town can expect to see the laws enforced in town as we enter the colder months, when idling is more prevalent.

“New Jersey is ahead of the curve in passing anti-idling legislation, with the purpose to reduce air and noise pollution,” Chief Marshuetz said. “But there are also other concerns for the police department. Idling leads to the theft of more vehicles, the potential for vehicle fires, and the risk of a child entering an unoccupied vehicle and putting it in the drive position.”

Anti-idling laws were strengthened in New Jersey in 2012. It is now one of the strictest states for idling limits in the country.

The Super Essex Conference (SEC) championship, rescheduled several times due to weather, ended with the Livingston High School girls’ cross country team winning the Liberty Division title.

The Liberty Division consists of 12 teams. “The Lady Lancers,” recounted coach Dave Czeizinger, “had a decent season, managing to post a 20-8 overall SEC record, and were a solid 9-2 in Liberty Division competition. The Lady Lancers went into the meet ranked third. They were eager to avenge the earlier losses to West Essex and Mount Saint Dominic.”

In the competition, each team was allowed a maximum of seven varsity runners on the line, with no mixing of teams from other divisions.

Philmon Mehari Wins Division Race:

The Livingston High School boys’ cross country team traveled to Branch Brook Park in Newark on Monday, October 7, for the last time this season to compete in the American Conference Championships. This event is the most competitive of the three conferences. The team ran well, with many Lancers recording personal best times. Senior Philmon Mehari took first place in his event, and the Lancers finished in seventh place overall with 166 total team points.
