The Livingston Dodgers of the U.S. Over Thirty Baseball League took two more games last week to run their consecutive winning streak to 11 games.

On Thursday night, August 17, the Dodgers took a 15-5 win over the Staten Island Bombers at Okner Field in Livingston. Kevin Thompson was credited with the win on the mound, while Craig Marsden finished up the game in relief.

SUMMER TEAM CHAMPS: The Livingston Little League 9/10 Summer team captured the District 8 championship with a 15-5 win over Nutley American. The team advanced to the Sectional finals, defeating Englewood Cliffs and Rutherford before falling to Elmora. Gathered around the championship banner are players Ben Leeds, Jared Levine, Ben Reed, Matthew Lopa, Max Peri, Julian Schultz, Anthony Pellegrino, Joe Meierhofer, E.J. Frayne, Miles Handy, Jackson Becker, and John Marco Maiello. Standing are coaches Dave McLaughlin, Shane McLaughlin, and Mike Sorrentino. Greg Bushwell also coaches the team.

Sisters Allison and Gayle Edelstein, along with Jamie Shneck, all stand-out athletes at Livingston High School, took home bronze and gold medals for their USA volleyball teams at this summer’s Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Allison, 22, and Jamie, 21, each graduated from college in May 2017 and helped the USA Women’s Open Volleyball team earn the bronze medal over Argentina. Gayle, 17, and a June 2017 graduate of Livingston High School, led the USA Junior Volleyball team to a gold medal over host Israel. Gayle and Allison were setters for their respective teams; Jamie was a middle.

Registration has begun for Livingston Girls on the Run, a physical activity-based personal development program for girls in the third through eighth grades. The fall 2017 program will be offered at the Livingston Oval on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:45 to 5 p.m., beginning Tuesday, September 12.

Chelsea Altchek, Randi Cohen, Wendy Keyes, Roberta Samuels, Joanne Szama, and Sue Wells, trained volunteer coaches, will guide and mentor the group, which can include eight to 20 girls.

RECREATION SOFTBALL CHAMPS: JAG Physical Therapy/Marra’s Restaurant won the Men’s Recreation M-4 Softball League championship by defeating Fidelity Paper, 13-7. WANG WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Jack Wang, an incoming junior at Livingston High School, is making a name for himself in the international world of table tennis. This summer, at the 2017 U.S. National Championships, he won the gold in men’s singles U21 and the bronze in mixed doubles.

OLD SCHOOL IS SOFTBALL CHAMP: The Old School team won the Businessmen’s Softball League MA Division with an overall record of 14-1. SENIOR BASEBALL LEAGUE AWARDS: At the recent Livingston Senior League baseball game, coaches presented special sportsmanship awards to one player on each of their teams selected by vote. One player, Jack Ernst, also received the Lee Hammer Sportsmanship Award. This award was previously given at the annual Amercian Legion July 4 baseball game; however the Legion League has disbanded in New Jersey.

The inaugural “Knock Cancer Out of the Park” campaign has been a huge success for the Livingston Little League. Knock Cancer Out of the Park is a grass roots campaign started in 2017 by Dr. Steven Arsht for the purpose of increasing pediatric cancer awareness and raising money to directly fund pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The Knock Cancer Out of the Park campaign was inspired by Jake Kestler, a 12 year old Livingston resident and long-time participant in the Livingston Little League who is currently battling brain cancer. As part of this campaign, $100 was donated for every home run hit this year in the Major League Division. The campaign has raised more than $6,500 in private donations. In addition, there were more than 50 home runs hit by players in the Major League Division during the 2017 season (which ended on June 1); this will add more than $5,000 to the fundraising total.

Nicole Rong, 15, of Livingston crossed the finish line in 21 minutes and 47 seconds to win second place in the Women’s Division at the tenth annual Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure 5K USATF Timed Run. Rong is the youngest female runner in the history of the race to achieve this honor.

More than 2,000 people went to Liberty State Park in Jersey City to attend the May 21st fundraiser, which raised more than $600,000 for the fight against breast cancer – an increase of $100,000 over the previous year (fundraising closed June 30).
