School Board Plans to Approve O’Neill as Interim Superintendent

The Livingston Board of Education has announced that it intends to approve the hiring of Jim O’Neill as interim superintendent of the Livingston public school district for the 2018-2019 school year. The official vote on his appointment will be made at the Board’s meeting on Wednesday, August 15.

O’Neill will be a familiar face to many, having served as interim superintendent of the district for the 2014-2015 school year.

LFD Responds to Fallen Trees, Wires

In the wake of a brief but intense rainstorm cell, members of the Livingston Fire Department responded to several calls of downed trees and downed electrical wires on Friday, August 3.

A primary electrical wire (at least 13,600 volts) came down and was burning between Grace Lutheran Church and the Wessex Professional Building on South Livingston Avenue near the intersection with Belmont Drive.

Tribune Honored by Police Department

TRIBUNE HONORED BY POLICE DEPARTMENT: At Tuesday evening’s National Night Out event, the Livingston Police Department honored the staff of the West Essex Tribune as “Community Members of the Year.” The newspaper and its employees were recognized “For their outstanding dedication to crime prevention in our community, specifically by being a partner with the police in alerting residents to crime trends within the township.”

EDGEMERE WATER MAIN: Employees of Reivax Contracting Corporation were hard at work on Edgemere Road on Monday, July 30, installing a new eight inch water main and replacing a fire hydrant. The work was being done as part of the township’s Edgemere Road, Highland Drive, and Chaucer Court water main improvement project.

India Fest Will Be Held Sunday

Sanskriti of New Jersey, the Livingston-based cultural organization, will host its annual India Fest on Sunday, August 12. The event will take place at the oval in Memorial Park from 3 to 7 p.m., and is open to the public free of charge.

The event will celebrate India’s culture with food, dance, and music. Among the offerings will be free BollyZumba and Bhangra dance lessons; dance and music performances; Menhndi henna stalls, and more. Vendors will be selling Indian food, clothes, and jewelry. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

Two Livingston Students Drown in Ramapo Lake

Two rising Livingston High School seniors died tragically Tuesday evening, Livingston Public Schools (LPS) officials confirmed.

A 17-year-old female and an 18-year-old male drowned in Ramapo Lake in Oakland Tuesday night.

LPS administrative staff confirmed the students’ deaths, but declined to identify them at press time Wednesday.

Grief support services were made available to students and staff at the high school on Wednesday and Thursday.

Selvin Is Candidate For School Board

Rachel Selvin, a retired lawyer and 14-year Livingston resident, has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Livingston Board of Education.

Following is her release:

Rachel has two children, one in Heritage Middle School and one who just finished his freshman year at Livingston High School. She has been an active parent volunteer in the school district since her older son started kindergarten at Collins Elementary School ten years ago. In addition to chairing many different committees at Collins, she was also its PTA president.

Goren Announces School Board Run

Todd Goren has filed a petition with the Essex County Clerk to seek one of the two open seats in the November Livingston Board of Education election.

Following is his release:

An 11-year resident of Livingston, Mr. Goren is a parent of three children in the Livingston Public Schools. His family has been actively involved in the school system; his wife, Laura (Kurland) Goren, a Livingston High School graduate, holds multiple volunteer leadership roles at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, Mt. Pleasant Middle School, Heritage Middle School and the Parent-Teacher (PT) Council. Mr. Goren also frequently coaches youth sports for his children.

Resignation Shocks the Community

Two last-minute agenda items were “walked in” to the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, July 25, as the meeting opened at 7 p.m. The first item was to accept the resignation of Christina Steffner as superintendent of schools, effective July 31. The second was for a separation of service agreement between her and the Board.

Continues Hearing Application For Gas Station & Convenience Store

The Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment, at a special meeting on Tuesday evening, July 31, continued hearing an application by New Jersey Energy Corporation to redevelop the property at 226 West Northfield Road into a gas station and a Chestnut Mart convenience store. The lot, located at the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue, was once home to a gas station, now closed; however, the property is located within the R-3 residential zone, where such a use is not permitted. The hearing was continued from a January meeting.
